We have received emails from instructors stating that the settings for restricting student quiz results in New Quizzes is not very clear. This post seeks to clear up some of the confusion.
A few things to understand:
- Posting quiz grades from your gradebook and the ‘Restrict student result view’ settings on the quiz’s settings page are entirely independent of each other.
- The settings on the New Quizzes Settings page controls what students can see after they have submitted their quiz attempt. These settings include the ability to ‘Show points awarded’ (i.e. the students’ grades). This view of their grade is visible to them even if you have hidden the grades in the gradebook.
- On the Quiz settings page, one of the options is to ‘Show item feedback’. This option shows the feedback that you have added to quiz questions and also the student-specific comments that you may have added when grading a submission in the Speedgrader. It does not show comments entered on the Speedgrader sidebar. Those comments are visible to students only when Grades have been posted.
- If you do not turn on the ‘Restrict student results view’ option on the quiz’s settings page, students will see everything as soon as they submit their attempt even if you have the quiz set to manually post in your gradebook.
- If you turn on ‘Restrict student result view’ and don’t check any of the boxes then students don’t see anything after they submit. If however, you have your gradebook set to automatically post grades for the quiz then they will see their score but they won’t be able to see any of the questions or any other feedback. They’ll see only the score.
- Selecting ‘Restrict student result view’ and checking all of the boxes gives you the same result that you would get if you didn’t turn on the ‘Restrict student result view’ at all, in other words, students will see all results.
- Lastly, this is not specific to New Quizzes, it is true for all assignment types, but it has been a source of some confusion when posting grades. When posting grades, if you select, ‘Everyone’ rather than ‘Graded’ in the little tray that slides out from the side of the screen, this effectively turns off the manual grading option for that assignment. In other words, if you select ‘Everyone’ when you post grades then any student who submits an attempt after that, they are going to immediately receive their grade as soon as it is auto-graded or as soon as you record the grade.
