Registration is open for the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship’s Fall 2025 workshops, which start September 3rd!
This semester’s workshop series features a line-up of incredible presenters to give you research and pedagogy inspiration using digital scholarship tools. Workshops will be held in two formats: in-person and online.
Back by popular demand, our in-person workshops will be hands-on workshops held face-to-face in Woodruff Library 312 on the third floor of the Woodruff Library (across from the Jones Room and near the Schatten Gallery). These workshops will include overviews of software as well as hands-on exercises to practice using them and will be held on Tuesdays from 1-2:30pm.
Our online workshops will be held on Wednesdays from 1-2pm via Zoom and will also be recorded and available afterward on our ECDS Workshops site for Emory students, faculty, and staff: https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/ecds-workshops/. You can also go back and watch over 35 previous workshops on topics like manipulating and visualizing data using popular tools like R, Python, and Tableau.
For course descriptions and to RSVP for our Fall 2025 workshops, visit the ECDS calendar here. For questions about the workshops, email ecds [at] emory [dot] edu.
This semester’s topics are:
| September 3 | Up and Running: Python on Google Colab*
This workshop introduces Google Colab, a cloud-based Python environment designed for data analysis, machine learning, and educational research. If you are familiar with Jupyter Notebook, Colab is a hosted, cloud-powered counterpart of that. We will cover the platform’s core features, basic configuration, and walk through a simple example so you can start experimenting with this platform yourself. This workshop is ideal for beginners who have basic programming concepts. Bonus: Educators and students receive one year of Google Colab Pro free with a valid emory.edu email address. (This offer is provided directly by Google and is not affiliated with or managed by Emory University.) |
| September 9 | Intro to ArcGIS Pro**
Come learn the basics of ArcGIS Pro desktop GIS software. This software is Windows-only and will be available on the classroom computers. This workshop will cover a brief comparison of GIS and mapping tools and an overview of the ArcGIS Pro interface, as well as adding and displaying spatial data, modifying symbology and labels, some basic data manipulation and analysis tools, and creating a map layout. This workshop will especially benefit users who have used lighter web-based mapping tools and are curious about the expanded capabilities of desktop software. However, beginners of all sorts are welcome! |
| September 10 | No Coding, No Problem: DIY Canva & WordPress Mini-Sites*
Learn how to create simple, polished websites using Emory’s WordPress ScholarBlogs and Canva, no coding required! This workshop will introduce both tools, walk through the basics of creating and customizing pages, and show how to publish a mini-site for a project, portfolio, or course. Whether you’re a student, researcher, or instructor, you’ll leave with the skills to build a digital home for your work. Ideal for beginners—no design or tech experience needed! |
| September 16 | Intro to Unity Game Engine**
This workshop will introduce participants to the Unity Game Engine, a powerful tool that can be used to create any 3D or 2D environment, including games and educational exhibits. We will be going over the basics of the engine, how to create a project, import assets, and create a first person controller |
| September 17 | Intro to ArcGIS StoryMaps*
This course will introduce a popular web-based platform for publishing interactive multimedia “stories” that combine maps, text, images, and more. We will cover best practices for telling a compelling story with your data and content, learn the tool’s basic functionality, and explore different layout options. This workshop will also highlight and explore new StoryMaps features. |
| September 23 | Google Sheets for Project Management**
Are you using spreadsheets for your projects to track data, tasks and timelines in Google Sheets? Join us for our “Google Sheets for Project Management” workshop, where we’ll explore formulas, filters, conditional formatting, and collaborative tools that can help you accomplish your goals for project planning and tracking. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own spreadsheets but there will also be a sample data set and exercises. This workshop assumes a beginner familiarity with Google Sheets. Lessons will generally apply to working in Excel as well. |
| September 24 | Connecting the Dots: Network Analysis with Gephi*
Do you have Humanities or Social Sciences data and want to study the networks in your dataset? This workshop will provide an introduction to producing network analysis visualizations. Attendees will learn the basics of working in Gephi, a free and open-source tool for creating network graphs and performing network analysis. |
| September 30 | Intro to Augmented Reality (AR)**
In this workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of augmented reality and how to deploy it. We will use 8thWall, a browser-based AR development platform, to build experiences that track to images, stick to real-world surfaces, and follow your face. No downloads or coding needed; just bring a smartphone or tablet, and leave with three shareable AR projects you can run instantly via QR code. |
| October 1 | “Push-Button” Papers: Reproducible Workflows in R*
This workshop takes participants from start to finish through a simple empirical research project. From file management, to data cleaning and analysis, to automatic table and figure generation, participants will learn best practices for writing clear, concise, and reproducible code. The workshop will be conducted primarily in R, but the general principles presented apply across all coding languages/software. We will also discuss incorporating Dropbox and Overleaf into your workflow, so that tables and figures generated by your code are automatically integrated into your LaTeX manuscript. |
