Asian Americans are a large, vibrant and diverse population, with a history that is deeply intertwined with the state of Georgia. Focusing on the Atlanta metro area, the Asian American Community Archive Collective Initiative (GAACAI) aims to collect, preserve, and make accessible materials related to and about the history and experience of Asian Americans in the Peach State.
The initiative brings together Asian American community members and organizations, as well as Georgia libraries, archives, and museums, in order to build new connections and amplify and celebrate the voices of Asian Americans. On their recently launched website, designed by ECDS Digital Publication Specialist Bailey Betik, you can find out more about the collective’s work, meet the team, and stay up to date with upcoming events.
Upcoming GAACAI Workshop (10/19, 11am-12:30pm, Emory University): The theme for this workshop will be “South Asians in Atlanta.” Anyone interested in learning about the history of Atlanta, immigration in the south, and the experiences of Asian Americans is welcome to attend. The workshop will revisit some aspects of South Asian arrival and presence in Georgia by introducing archival materials from popular community magazines such as Khabar and Trikone. After a short open discussion, participants will be invited to craft their own community history narratives using these archives in a creative zine format. There will be a zine making demo. The event is free, supplies will be provided, and no experience is necessary! RSVP here
