The Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) is pleased to announce the launch of the Howard Thurman Digital Archive. ECDS supported the Pitts Theology Library in the creation of the website, which highlights materials related to Thurman’s life. The website also hosts audio recordings of many of Thurman’s sermons, speeches, lectures, and interviews.
On April 3, 2019, the Pitts Theology Library hosted a Howard Thurman Film Screening and panel discussion of the documentary “Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story.” Directed by Martin Doblmeier, the film featured Candler School of Theology faculty members Luther E. Smith Jr., Professor Emeritus of Church and Community, and Gregory C. Ellison II, Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling. Panelists included the aforementioned featured faculty members, as well as Walter Fluker, Martin Luther King, Jr., Professor of Ethical Leadership at Boston University, and Lerita Coleman Brown, Ayse I. Carden Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology at Agnes Scott College. This event was a huge success with over 130 attendees, and the launch of the Howard Thurman Digital Archive was announced at the event.
