Environmental Protection in Taiwan
The problem of pollution in the world is becoming more and more serious, and the Earth’s temperature continues to rise. National governments are researching how to remedy various environmental problems such as global warming and pollution. Taiwan is no exception. The Taiwanese government says that it is currently promoting a variety of environmental protection concepts, hoping that the general public will cooperate with the government’s environmental protection activities.
Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Agency was established in 1987. The EPA’s vision is for Taiwan to have “Blue skies and green lands, green mountains and clean waters, and sustainable health.” To achieve this goal, the EPA not only has to adopt new environmental protection policies, but more importantly must increase the Taiwanese citizens’ awareness of environmental protection. To promote environmental protection concepts, the EPA not only broadcasts environmental protection information on the radio, but also airs advertisements on television that teach the public how to protect the environment. Furthermore, in many public places, such as convenience stores, the EPA’s posters can be seen. Besides that, the EPA’s website has abundant information. To educate kids about environmental protection, the EPA also meticulously designed a Children’s Environmental Protection Education Website, in hopes that the next generation of Taiwanese people will also have a strong awareness of environmental protection.
Besides education, concrete environmental protection action is also of course very important. The EPA recently has been promoting “Saving Energy and Reducing Carbon Emissions,” hoping that the Taiwanese public can save energy, save gas, and reduce air pollution. Taiwan’s public transportation, such as bus and subway, is becoming more and more convenient. Kaohsiung is also currently constructing a subway system. The EPA hopes that the public will use public transportation more. Many Taiwanese commuters have already chosen not to drive cars, but instead to ride the bus or subway to and from work.
Although the Taiwanese public’s awareness of environmental protection still needs to be strengthened, the environmental protection actions of the Taiwanese people have shown clear improvement. We hope that there will be further developments in the future.
