Nicole Linderman

This is Bada Shanren’s landscape painting called “Lotus and Birds”. At the bottom of this painting are some small trees and three boulders. On top of the boulders are two birds. At the top of the painting are some very big and tall lotus flowers. This painting isn’t very colorful. It only uses black and grey ink. However, the various painting techniques give this painting a very beautiful appearance.
Bada Shanren was born in 1626. He was a member of the Ming Dynasty royal family. However, in 1644 the Ming Dynasty was overthrown. The Qing Dynasty emperor wanted to kill all of the Ming royals. Bada Shanren had no choice but to evade the Qing government. Because Bada Shanren is very sad and angry, his paintings and poetry express his protest of the Qing government.
This painting is very harmonious and quiet. The two birds peacefully stand on the rocks. The birds are looking at each other, as if they are talking. These birds have slightly sad expressions. You could say that the birds’ expressions represent Bada Shanren’s suffering. If I was in the painting, I would sympathize with the birds and give them some food. In the painting, I would like to sit on the rock, look at the clear sky, and breathe the fresh air.
