Business Research Database Blog Series: Screening for companies on S&P NetAdvantage

The Emory community has access to a wealth of business research databases. This series highlights many of these great resources, including content and the best applications for classes and career prep.

What You Will Find

Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage is a treasure trove of company and industry information. In fact, the first thing you might notice when logging into this database is the immense amount of information that appears on the dashboard, including tables and charts about recent macroeconomic, market trends, and stock performance, as well as an extensive menu of research tools. Today, we’ll focus on the company screening function. One of the benefits of using Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage for creating company lists is that, unlike other company list tools, they include both public and private company information, and they cover companies worldwide.

Use for Class Projects

Are you working on a class project that involves finding competitors in a niche industry? Or perhaps you are learning about mergers and acquisitions and need to practice creating a list of potential target companies? There are many assignments in business school that require you to understand what companies might be participating in particular industries, providing a specific service or product, or that have a specific company structure or status. S&P NetAdvantage can help you create lists based on criteria like geographic location, equity valuation, industry classification, and much more. One of the unique features of S&P NetAdvantage company screenings is that you can search for keywords in the business description. This feature can help you uncover lesser-known companies who provide a specific service or product.

Use for Interview Prep

S&P NetAdvantage is a great tool for advancing your career and internship search. For one, you can locate potential employers outside of the United States, a feature that is unique to NetAdvantage’s screening tool compared to other databases like AtoZ Databases and Hoovers. You can also develop a deeper understanding of your potential employers competitive landscape or acquisition history, giving you more insights to work with to prepare for you interview.
