Nov. 21, 1995: The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 5,023.55, surpassing 5,000 for the first time. Although it took from 1972-1995 for the Dow to move from 1000 to 5000, the next few years saw a rapid rise with the Dow increasing to 10,000 in 1999.
