My family lives in Walton County, and my sister seems to think that because they live in the country, they are immune to the COVID-19 virus.  Meanwhile, I am trying to protect my parents, who are in there 70’s, and keep everyone safe. It’s hard to explain probability when you have no data, but this morning, I found GA Tech’s risk assessment tool.

In the lower left corner, use the slider to select crowd size and then hover over a county to see the risk level. For instance, if there are 50 people in a grocery store in DeKalb County, there is an 87% chance that at least one person there will be carrying the COVID-19 virus. Push the occupancy up to 100 people and the risk moves up to 98%.

For Walton County where my family lives, if a gathering consists of 100 people the risk is 84%; not that far behind DeKalb. By comparison, that same population in Gwinnett drives the risk level up to 98%. I am sharing this with my team and with my family in the hopes that they will start to take social distancing seriously. It’s hard to ignore when you have data to back it up.
