Using Rose Library resources remotely

Although the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library is currently closed to non-Emory visitors, many of our rich resources can be accessed at home.  These materials include image collections, maps, rare books, audiovisual materials, and born digital materials.  Researchers interested in specific topics can also contact the Rose Library reference staff for help identifying material that can be accessed remotely.  Collections with asterisks (**) indicate that the collection is available remotely only during the period the Rose Library Reading Room is closed to non-Emory users.

As of July 6, the Rose Library is accepting appointments on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10-12 and 1-3 for Emory faculty, graduate students and staff that have completed the registration process and received clearance to return to campus in compliance with the Return to Campus Guidelines. Appointments can be made here. 

 African American life and culture 

• 

  A circa 1940s baseball team (MSS1218_B037_I035), Robert Langmuir African American Photograph Collection

  The Robert Langmuir African American Photograph collection is an extensive and exceptional collection of photographs documenting African American life from the 1840s-1980s.  With over 10,000 images ranging in subject matter from road workers and school teachers to professional athletes and artists, the collection presents an extraordinary visual record of interest to scholars and the general public alike.  Visit the collection.  Researchers may contact the Rose Library reference staff for remote access to an additional 2500 images.  
• The Boule Journal is the official publication of Sigma Pi Phi, the first Greek-letter fraternity founded by African American men.  This full-text searchable journal includes issues from 1925-2015.

Georgia and Southern history 

• The Ron Sherman photograph collection contains digitized silver gelatin prints by Atlanta photographer Ron Sherman from 1970-1988.  Images include political figures, civil rights events, the groundbreaking of the King historic site, the United States Conference of Mayors meeting in 1971, a Ku Klux Klan rally at Stone Mountain, sporting events including the 1974 Hank Aaron home run, and other local events.  Visit the collection 

• **The Bobby Jones Photograph collection includes 2,342 photographs from Emory’s Bobby Jones collection and the Sidney L. Matthew Bobby Jones collection and Research files.  Researchers must contact the Rose Library reference staff for remote access. 
• The Rose Library Historic Map collection is a unique collection of 250 printed maps and atlases, especially maps related to Atlanta, Georgia and the South. 
• The ATLMaps project is a digital platform that allows users to overlay historical maps and vector data on a modern map of Atlanta to view changes over time, investigate research questions, or share stories about the city and includes many historic maps from the Rose Library.   

 Print and book collections

• The Emory Yellowback collection is a collection of over 2,000 Victorian paperbacks.  250 full-text searchable digital copies are currently available with more to come in Emory’s new digital library this summer. 
• The Emory Women Writers Research project contains digitized American and British genre fiction from the Rose Library collection written by and about women from the 17th-20th centuries, particularly dime novels.   
• Views of Rome is the online home of the 1773 edition of Pirro Ligorio’s Anteiquae Urbis Imago (Image of the Ancient City) held in the Rose Library. Originally published in 1561, the Imago is a cartographic reconstruction of fourth-century AD Rome.  
• **The Emory Wheel is the independent, student-run newspaper of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Full-text searchable digital copies from the first issue in 1919 to the present are available.  Researchers may contact the Rose Library reference staff for remote access. 

 Audio, video, and born-digital resources 

• **Many audio and video recordings from manuscript collections and Emory University Archives are available for remote research.  To locate available material, researchers should search EmoryFindingAids (the Rose Library’s search and discovery system) for material of interest.  Available material will include a note in the collection description that a digitized copy is available in the Reading Room as below:
