Books

Based at the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry and sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Emory College Office of Faculty, the Digital Publishing in the Humanities initiative aims to support the development and publication of digital and open access monographs by faculty in humanistic fields.

Our initiative supports the broad dissemination of new scholarship by faculty at Emory University and other metro-Atlanta institutions through subventions for open access made directly to publishers. All of the books on this page were supported by our subvention program and can be read online for free.

Finding God in All the Black Places: Sacred Imaginings in Black Popular Culture

Beretta E. Smith-Shomade

Sin miedo a las ruinas was published open access in July 2024 by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Romance Studies (distributed by University of North Carolina Press). Read more about the book on our program website.

The Power of Practice: How Music and Yoga Transformed the Life and Work of Yehudi Menuhin

Kristin Wendland

The Power of Practice showcases the pioneering achievements of renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916-99) and how the discipline of yoga transformed his life and practice. Menuhin’s contributions as a performer, teacher, and humanitarian are celebrated around the world. Less well known, however, is Menuhin’s devotion to the practice of yoga and his close friendship with the renowned yogi B. K. S. Iyengar (1918–2014), whose guidance profoundly influenced Menuhin as both a musician and a philanthropist. Through the lens of the life and work of the celebrated violinist and devoted yogi, this book uncovers deep connections between music and yoga.

The Power of Practice was published open access in January 2024 by SUNY Press. An enhanced edition with supplementary content is available in Manifold. Read more about the book on our program website.
