Course description
Free for Emory graduate students, the five-week Emory Foundations for Online Teaching (EFOT) course aims to give instructors first-hand experience in online teaching and learning. The course places the instructor in the seat of the online student using Canvas. Each week of the May 14 – June 15, 2018 course requires about 3 to 4 hours of work.
The course covers:
- best practices for and methodology behind online teaching
- instructional design
- tools and technologies
- Emory resources for online education
Modules focus on:
- teaching using a learning management system
- pedagogically sound course design
- developing learning objectives and assessments for the online environment
- synchronous and asynchronous communication techniques
- building an online community
The Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS), in partnership with the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE), manages the graduate student sessions. Successful completion of the program may be helpful to students interested in teaching or serving as a teaching assistant in the Emory College of Arts and Sciences.
What you need
Participants must have a computer with internet access, webcam, and a headset/microphone. There will be no face-to-face meetings, so the course can be taken from anywhere with internet access. It is highly recommended that participants complete a Canvas 101 training prior to the start of the EFOT course.
Who should apply
Graduate students from any school in the Emory community who are interested in online learning best practices or are preparing to teach wholly or partially in an online environment may apply. Students that complete the course will be given a letter of accomplishment from CFDE.
