  English Transcript:

This ink painting, named Smokey Clouds over the River, was created in 1996 by Chen Jun. A series of tall, jagged cliffs and sharp mountains are featured prominently and occupy the top half of the painting. On top of the mountains and cliffs, Chen Jun carefully placed detailed trees, as well as a small house on a flattened cliff area near the center. Below, a dense, wispy fog rises from a wide river passing between the series of mountains and cliffs above and a similar cliff the other side. A sailboat drifts down the river under the cloud-like fog.

Born in 1935 in Deyang (Sichuan Province), Chen Jun grew up in a family of which many members were profession artists. In his grandfather’s and father’s generation the family was supported by the money earned from selling paintings, so Chen was exposed to many styles. Of those, Chen showed great interest in traditional styles from a young age; his uncle, Chen Jiabin, taught Chen and his cousins the skills necessary to create traditional-styled Chinese paintings when Chen was nine years old, and even then his uncle noticed Chen’s talent and dedication. Chen Jun retired in 1991 after sixty years of painting, but his works are still well appreciated in China, Australia, and Taiwan, where they are very well known and received many awards. I chose this ink painting because I am fascinated with its beauty and unique elegance.

In this ink painting, Chen Jun skillfully captures the majesty and beauty of the mountains and the nature of the clouds hanging around them. The painting seems to come to life and has a calming effect. If I were the painter I would have considered putting a bit more detail in the boat sailing down the river. One of my favorite parts of the painting is the detail of the trees.
