(SeungSoo Lee)

This painting, Ge Zhichuan Relocating, is a masterpiece of a famous Yuan Dynasty artist, Wang Meng. Measured 139.5 by 58 meters, the painting is currently displayed in the Palace Museum in Beijing, China. Numerous steep stone mountains can be found in the painting and on these mountains are beautifully blossomed red and blue trees. There are also several waterfalls, which at the bottom of the mountain form a small and tranquil river. You can also find people crossing the river at the bottom of the mountain. The painting is generally brown, but the colorful trees make this painting interesting.

In 1308, Wang Meng was born in Zhe Jiang. He was a maternal grandson of Zhao Mengfu, thus making him a descendant of the Song Dynasty‘s royal bloodline, the House of Zhao. Wang Meng is considered to be one of the four great masters of the Yuan Dynasty, thus many scholars consider him to have influenced the works of more recent artists. Most of Wang Meng’s paintings are now displayed in Palace Museum and Shanghai Museum.

I really like this painting because of its depiction of mesmerizing and lively landscape. I find the blue trees the most intriguing because I’ve never seen trees in that color. If I were to be in this painting, I want to sit at the side of this river with my feet in it and listen to the waterfall crash into the river. I also want to ask the people crossing the river where they are headed to. If I were the painter, I would paint a sun because it would help make the overall atmosphere feel warmer.
