Geospatial Research Analyst, ORISE Fellowship
Category : Alumni
The Geospatial Research Analyst fellowship is within the Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program (GRASP), a program within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). GRASP is responsible for geospatial science, analysis, visualization, and technology as applied to environmental health, site-specific exposure, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response. GRASP works with ATSDR, other CDC centers/institutes/offices, state/local health organizations, other federal agencies, international governments, academia, and advocacy groups.
GRASP OVERVIEW
The mission of GRASP is to provide leadership and expertise in the application of the concepts, methods, and tools of geography and geospatial information science to public health research and practice. The objectives of GRASP are to:
- Research and analyze the geospatial trends and patterns associated with environmental health, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response
- Geospatially enable CDC/ATSDR scientists and systems with data, consulting, technology, and training
- Collaborate with scientists at CDC/ATSDR and among our public health partners to address environmental health, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response issues
- Contribute to a vibrant geospatial community among public health professionals
- Embrace, leverage, and promote technology
FELLOWSHIP OVERVIEW
As a Geospatial Research fellow, the incumbent will gain knowledge of GRASP and its research partners on the conduct, analysis, and synthesis of geospatial public health studies. The successful candidate will be a part of and assist in the goals of GRASP’s Geospatial Epidemiology and Applied Research (GEAR) unit. Specific topics associated with this fellowship are outlined below:
(1) Geospatial Study Design
a. Gain experience in geospatial public health concepts, methods, and techniques
b. Gain experience in developing, refining, and implementing study plans and protocols supporting the examination of public health data from a geographic perspective
c. Gain experience in providing strategic counsel, guidance, and recommendations to project partners for designing geospatial, ecological, and epidemiologic studies
(2) Geospatial Research Coordination
a. Gain experience in geospatial visualization and analysis of exposure information and risk factors that could affect exposure and health outcomes in epidemiologic studies
b. Gain experience in analyzing geospatial and temporal patterns and trends evident in public health data
c. Gain experience in reviewing interpretations of results from geospatial analyses to communicate findings clearly and accurately based on the analysis that was completed
(3) Systematic Literature Review, Reporting, and Management
a. Gain experience in conducting systematic literature reviews on public health problems using a geographic perspective
b. Gain experience in conducting study eligibility assessments and screenings of abstracts and full-text articles against defined inclusion/exclusion criteria
c. Gain experience in conducting data extraction and perform critical appraisal of research studies
d. Become knowledgeable in developing, updating, and maintaining study databases and source documents
e. Gain experience in assisting in the development and preparation of literature review reports
(4) Project Management and Coordination
a. Gain experience in conceptualizing and managing research projects
b. Receive mentorship from GRASP colleagues on research, project needs, and analyses
c. Support data collection and visualization
d. Support public health content and publication development
