Reminder: Managing Chemical Waste in Labs

Is your lab compliant with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)? RCRA is the public law that creates the framework for the proper management of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste.

To ensure proper management of chemical waste in Emory laboratories, please review the following actions:

  1. Complete the chemical waste label. Chemical waste labels include PI name, Building/Room #, Phone #, and primary constituents and concentrations of each.
  2. Put the label on the waste container. Containers should be labeled with EHSO’s chemical waste label and information representing the associated hazards (e.g. flammable, corrosive, health hazard, etc.).
  3. Labels must be legible and visible at all times. Replace illegible labels as needed (see image below).
  4. Containers must remain closed when not in use. Leaving a funnel in the waste container is not appropriate. An example of “in use” is actively adding waste to the container.
  5. Request waste collection when the container is 80% full and/or if empty waste containers are needed. Use the new Regulated (Chemical) Waste Request System online.

If you have any questions, please contact your EHSO Building Liaison.
