Sandra Franklin, director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library, was awarded the Janet Doe Lectureship, one of the most prestigious awards given by the Medical Library Association. It recognizes an MLA member who has contributed significantly to the organization and gives them the opportunity to present their unique perspective on the history or philosophy of medical librarianship.
Franklin delivered her lecture entitled, “Diversity That Defines Us: The View Through A Crystal Lens,” during the 2021 MLA annual meeting (May 24-27) that was held virtually. Her speech transcript will be published in a 2022 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA).
Franklin’s lecture was the first presentation to be delivered live from the new Emory Libraries Streaming and Recording Studio (SRS). With the technical expertise of Learning Commons coordinator Alex Kyrychenko, the experience was positive and went smoothly.
“I was anxious about finding a location to present an hour-long lecture followed by 30-plus minutes of Q & A using stable internet connectivity,” Franklin said. “When the Streaming and Recording Studio came online, it was perfect. The ambience and sound quality were outstanding! MLA conference producers were impressed. The ability to read my slide script facing forward while the audience viewed only the slides meant everything. It was a wonderful experience. We are blessed at Emory to have studio options with great tech support for self-service use.”
