Daniel Mulhall, Ireland’s ambassador to the United States, will give a lecture titled ” ‘To Sweeten Ireland’s Wrong’: W.B. Yeats in the 1890s” on Monday,
Nov. 6, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Room at Emory University’s Woodruff Library. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Mulhall is an avid scholar of Irish history and literature, particularly the work of W.B. Yeats, and has presented on a wide range of topics at universities all over the world. His lecture title is taken from a line in the Yeats poem, “To Ireland in the Coming Times.”
The author of “A New Day Dawning: A Portrait of Ireland in 1900” (The Collins Press, Cork, 1999) and co-editor of “The Shaping of Modern Ireland: A Centenary Assessment” (Irish Academic Press, Dublin, 2016), Mulhall has contributed to books, newspapers and journals published in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Britain.
Mulhall’s lecture offers an ideal connection to the Rose Library’s Irish literary collections, which includes materials from Eamon Grennan, Seamus Heaney, Rita Ann Higgins, Michael Longley, Derek Mahon, and Paul Muldoon.
“Our papers related to Yeats are a cornerstone of Rose Library’s literary collections,” says Rosemary M. Magee, Rose Library director. “We’re most honored to have Ambassador Mulhall at Emory to give us an even broader and deeper understanding of Yeats’ place in Irish literature and history.”
Geraldine Higgins, director of the Irish Studies program at Emory, adds that Mulhall has long been a proponent of Ireland as the world’s smallest cultural superpower. “During Yeats’s 150th birthday year in 2015,” she says, “the Ambassador tweeted a line of Yeats poetry every day, bringing Irish poetry right into the heart of everyday life.”
The lecture is sponsored by the Consulate General of Ireland and the Irish Studies program at Emory University.
