First-year students can get help connecting to Emory’s wireless network from Student Technology Support during move-in weekend on Saturday,
Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. New students can bring their devices to STS, located on Level 1 of the Woodruff Library, and sign in on the iPads at the desk.
STS assists students with technology issues on their smartphones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, media devices such as Roku or Apple TVs, smart TVs, and other devices that use an internet connection. (No need to carry your TV in; you can self-register or STS will help you get it connected via your account.)
In recent years, that list has included devices such as Alexa and other virtual assistants, and even sous-vide immersion cookers. “We’re introduced to the latest things here,” says STS coordinator Michael Buchmann. “A lot of computer science majors work at STS, and they love the newest technology.”
On that Saturday, the focus will be on helping new students get their devices connected to the Emory network and installing proper anti-virus protection and useful software such as EaglePrint and the Microsoft Office suite. A free service for all Emory students, STS also provides support with device failure and provides some hardware assistance in cases of non-functioning devices, virus removal, and troubleshooting.
Returning students may need to re-register their laptops when they arrive. Previously registered devices that connected to DooleyNet will now need to be directed to EmoryGuest, as DooleyNet has been retired and merged with EmoryGuest. New TVs, game consoles, and media devices can be self-registered by following the instructions on the STS self-help page. Those who need help are welcome to come in when they arrive on campus.
During this two-week back-to-school period last year, STS assisted over 1,260 students with various issues. “It’s a very busy time for us, but it’s what I like to refer to as organized chaos,” Buchmann says.
For new students who can’t make it in on Saturday, STS will reopen on Monday, Aug. 27, beginning their regular hours of Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a full list of services, visit the STS web page. STS is part of Student Digital Life, a division of Emory Libraries and Information Technology Services (LITS).
