Houston: We have a BBA

Astronaut Wiseman_Neutral Bouyancy Lab
During the summer before my sophomore year, I received an email from the pre-BBA listserv indicating that NASA was recruiting at Emory for their Johnson Space Center Pathways Program. I was particularly excited because the email indicated that NASA was looking for sophomores interested in business. As someone who is fascinated by space exploration and all the cool things NASA does, I marked my calendar for the upcoming information session and started the application process.

After completing two rounds of interviews, I waited for the decision. By late November, I had an offer for the NASA Pathways position! I then started planning how to fit my co-op tours at NASA with my academic semesters at Emory. Continue reading

Goizueta Captures 2nd Place

Andres Gil & Jamie Gullo
Andres Gil and James Gullo seized second place in the Business Language Case Competition hosted by the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University November 7, 2014. En español, the team worked for a week on their recommendation that the Swiss Bank Alpen not immediately enter the Romanian credit card market. Few teams took this contrarian view, but it paid off for Goizueta. After two rounds and some grueling questions from judges, the three finalists were announced after lunch. The judges were impressed with the Goizueta team’s analysis and their handling of the Q&A. Tom Bishop, VP of Product and Manufacturing at Skullcandy was the keynote. Networking with the judges, many of whom had multiple international assginments, was an added perk to participation – in addition to the awesome views of the Wasatch Mountains from the BYU campus.

Goizueta’s Newest Program – MPA

AICPA2

In fall 2014 the Goizueta Business School will launch its newest degree program, the BBA Masters in Professional Accounting (MPA) combined degree. The program is aimed at Goizueta BBA students interested in pursuing the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. Given the recent change in credit hours at Emory, BBA students interested in professional accounting careers will find it hard to meet the education requirements to sit for the CPA exam within our four- semester BBA framework. The BBA/MPA degree program is designed to enable BBAs to complete master-level coursework while completing the requirements to sit for the CPA exam. Continue reading

Inaugural Sophomore NY Trek

BBA Sophomore TrekEvery year BBA juniors trek up to New York City to visit banks on Wall Street. This past year, we had a record 15 stops with 70 students in attendance. The overwhelming feedback from our juniors was that the trip was extremely helpful, but they wished they had more information sooner.

So, in typical Goizueta B-school style, we decided to fix that issue immediately. After a few emails and phone calls, the BBA Career Management Center (CMC) put together the inaugural “Goizueta BBA CMC Boot camp in NYC “. When we conceived of the idea, we were hoping for maybe 4-5 alumni presenters and 20 students in attendance. Thanks to our tremendous alumni and unbelievably eager student body, we had 21 alumni presenters representing 8 banks and an audience of over 50 students!

The point of the day was for students to gain information in three areas:

  • What are the different jobs a recent grad can get on Wall Street, besides investment banking?
  • What do people in those jobs actually DO, particularly investment bankers!
  • What is the culture like in the different firms?

Feedback from students indicated that they gained knowledge in all three areas and now feel much more prepared to start getting ready for junior year internship interviews. Students felt they really got to know the personalities of each bank and had a good idea of what future opportunities they would like to pursue.

As with almost everything we do in the BBA CMC we need to thank our alumni and recruiting partners at the following firms for this fantastic new event: Bank of America, Blackrock, BMO, BNP Paribas, Citi, Houlihan Lokey, HSBC and Morgan Stanley. A very special thank you to our BNP Paribas partners for hosting us for the entire day and for making us a core school this year! We cannot wait to repeat this event next year, and hope to double both the number of students attending and the banks represented.

New Extra-Curricular Experience for Finance BBAs

Goizueta Finance Group_logoIn spring 2014, seniors Mike Ordway, Sara Schneider and Howell Zheng, and junior Aaron Weiner met with the BBA Program staff to begin planning a reorganization of the finance extra-curricular experience at Goizueta. Mike and Sara, co-presidents of Goizueta Investors, came up with the idea of a more coordinated effort between finance clubs in order to deliver an even stronger extra-curricular finance experience. Howell, president of the Alternative Investments Group (AIG), and Aaron, president of the Goizueta Investment Management Group, joined Mike and Sara to help drive this effort. Fall 2014 will mark the first semester for the new Goizueta Finance Group, a cohort of five new and existing programs that will offer BBAs interested in finance ample opportunities to experience finance outside of the classroom. Duo Secures 1st Place@Siperstein Case Competition

Siperstein Winners

Do you dream of performing like Beyoncé?  “We’re trying to give everyone that celebrity experience,” explains Victoria Tao, BBA14 who developed MV Booth together  with Julie Shen, BBA14.

After meeting in a Japanese film class at Emory and discovering their shared a passion for Japanese culture, the duo decided to develop the concept for MV Booth.  Similar to a photo booth, people would be able to film themselves in a music video booth. The customer would select a song from a library and start performing. Added effects would include back-up dancers, colors and various video editing features. Tao, a Computer Science double major, will program MV Booth so customers can easily share the finished product on Social Media.

When they heard about the Siperstein Business Plan Competition, started by alumnus Jason Siperstein and open to all Emory undergraduates, they submitted their 3-minute YouTube pitch and 2-page Executive Summary. The plan included two parts: 1) Professional recording studio for aspiring song writers with multi-tiered pricing and 2) Music video booth.

On April 16, along with seven other teams, they presented before a panel of judges for 10 minutes and answered questions for five minutes. The potential market opportunity for the booth most impressed the judges. Despite the fact that their business plan was only in the concept phase, Julie and Victoria were thrilled to win the $2000 prize. They both look forward to starting new jobs after graduation, while working on the next phase of MV Booth which involves patenting the concept and programming.

Stellar Finish at Georgetown Competition

team photo

Faizan Bhatty, BBA14, Andrew Graf, BBA14, Edward Mulder, BBA14 and Aakash Parlecha, BBA15 – better known as the Wolf Pack – represented Goizueta at the 10th annual McDonough-Hilltop Business Strategy Challenge at Georgetown University, February 5-9, 2014. Lee Pasackow, Business Librarian, accompanied the group as the faculty advisor.

The opening ceremony at the City Tavern Club, founded in 1796, was the perfect setting to mingle with the 19 other teams, nine of which hailed from non-U.S. schools including Maastricht and Thammasat University, both Goizueta partner schools.

The KPMG session on Thursday gave tips on presentation style and structure. The president of Plexus Consulting Group talked about the rewards and challenges of working with non-profit companies.

Finally at 1:00 pm the teams learned that the client for 2014 was The National Industries for the Blind, based in Virginia. The strategic intelligence team discussed their mission of providing employment opportunities for the blind and severely visually impaired individuals nationwide. The teams were tasked with developing innovative models to increase employment beyond NIB’s traditional government contracts. After a one hour client Q&A, the teams started their 36 hour preparation. All slide decks were due, Saturday at 6 am. Continue reading

Second Place in Spanish Case Competition

Group_Picture

Goizueta is preparing leaders to succeed in the global marketplace. What better way to sharpen your skills and differentiate yourself than to compete in a case competition en español! Angelica Calderon, BBA14, Elisse Jean-Pierre, BBA14 and Kristin Rebescher, BBA14 did just that at the Business Language Case Competition hosted by the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University, November 8, 2013. Only non-native speakers are permitted to participate in this competition; however, each team may include someone who was raised in America, but who grew up speaking the language of their heritage in the home.

The Spanish case was distributed two weeks prior to the competition. The team was tasked with recommending to Walmart whether they should enter the organics food market. Content and delivery of the case presentation counted for 2/3 of the score, while language usage and grammar counted for the remaining 1/3. Continue reading
