It is a rare species listed as a federal and state threatened species. This annual completes its life cycle in shallow granite outcrop pools during winter and spring. Later in spring, it will have two kinds of flowers: a tiny white solitary flower between the two leaves above the water, and another one born submerged. The submerged one never opens and fertilizes itself.
