Position Description 

The Cancer Registry of Greater California (CRGC), a program of the Public Health Institute (PHI), is seeking an Abstractor II to support its important work in the cancer community.

The Abstractor II will perform casefinding by reviewing pathology reports, electronic medical records, the Medical Record Disease Index (MRDI) and other casefinding documents, and later abstracting identified cases. They will also assist with other regional abstracting activities as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review casefinding documents such as online pathology reports to determine hospital, state, and national reportability.
  • Abstract and code data from electronic medical records according to specific guidelines.
    Accurately interpret and code American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), Collaborative Staging, ICD-O-3 coding, Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules, and the Hematopoietic reporting requirements.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of Cancer Reporting in California, Volume I.
  • Abstract for assigned contracted reporting facilities, which include but are not limited to surgery centers, radiation centers, or hospitals.
  • Provide abstracting training for Abstractor I, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and relevant healthcare experience.
  • Credentialed by the National Cancer Registrar’s Association (NCRA) as a CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar).
  • 5 years of abstracting experience. Either regional registry, hospital, contract, or combination abstracting accepted.
  • Ability to maintain at least 97% 97% abstracting and coding accuracy.
  • Solid understanding of California reportability requirements.
  • Knowledge of cancer therapy, Collaborative Staging, ICD-O-3 coding, Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules, cancer reporting in California utilizing Volume I and the Hematopoietic reporting requirements.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy and physiology and the cancer disease process.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).

Important Information

  • This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position based in Sacramento, CA.
