CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Surveillance and Data Science Branch (SDSB), Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

DSTDP’s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications. The mission of SDSB is to capture STD morbidity data, assess STD burden and trends, and develop and conduct sentinel surveillance of STDs and STD adverse outcomes. These surveillance activities provide a foundation for the annual STD Surveillance Reports. Additionally, SDSB evaluates and provides recommendations for improving STD surveillance systems and provides guidance on the inclusion of STD data elements into information systems that can electronically receive, store, and transmit STD morbidity and case management data.

Research Project: Possible learning opportunities include assisting with:

  • Coordinating the tracking and management of issues that arise during data quality reviews
  • Developing innovative data visualization products for hard copy and digital publications, presentations, dashboards, and communication materials
  • Analyzing and managing data collected from multiple data sources using various methodologies
  • Developing and managing data analysis guides, data documentation, data management procedures, reports, and analysis
  • Developing SAS and R programs to conduct data analyses, data management, and data visualizations

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by May 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with using SAS, R, and PowerBI
  • Experience with using SQL
  • Strong writing and communication skills
