Internship Program, Connecticut Public Health

The DPH Summer Internship Program is designed as a 10-week, hybrid program taking place from June 3, 2025 through August 14, 2025.  Interns will have the week of July 4th off. 

Student Intern Eligibility

  • 3rd or 4th-year undergraduate or graduate student from an accredited academic institution.
  • International students must have the required visa and permissions to undertake an internship/experiential learning opportunity. Please consult with the international students office at your academic institution for assistance.
  • A reference letter from a faculty advisor or equivalent, indicating good academic standing.
  • Completed application, including a resume or CV.

Weekly programming and events that will count towards your attendance could include:   

  • One weekly (generally Wednesday afternoons) in-person event called “Peer to Peer” at DPH 410 Capital Avenue, which is an interactive learning session where guest speakers from state, local, and non-profit public health agencies present on varying topics covered in the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals.  Sessions will be for 2 to 3 hours. 
  • One weekly (generally Thursday afternoons) 1 hour virtual webinar event called “This is Public Health” where guest speakers host a virtual session on different public health practice areas. 
  • Weekly (generally Friday mornings) 30-minute virtual check-in meetings with Internship Coordinator staff from CT DPH.

Requirements for Successful Completion of the Summer Internship Program:   

  • Commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week which includes 4 to 5 hours of public health programming per week hosted by DPH during the course of the internship program. The minimum total is 180 hours over the summer.  
  • Be engaged in completing the internship project and meet the expectations of the respective preceptor.  
  • Maintain a minimum 70% attendance to all in person and virtual DPH and local health programming and events, which is mandatory to receive credit for completion of the internship.
  • The internship program responsibilities are separate from the responsibilities required by your preceptor during the internship period.
  • Both preceptor and internship program requirements must be met to receive a Certificate of Completion.
