SUMMARY:
Provide health research and writing of associated scientific products to support scientific activities in the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), Associate Director of Science (ADS) office
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct literature reviews related to particular scientific topics.
  • Develop analytical plans to be approved by the ADS staff or project lead.
  • Complete a concept proposal and once approved will present it before the OSH Science Committee.
  • Conduct the data analysis, present and discuss findings, and assist with drafting a manuscript or report.
  • Enter scientific documents in eClearance for review as directed by the OSH project lead.
  • Assist with reviewing paperwork and related documentation for OSH Office of Management and Budget (OMB)/Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) applications.
  • Make recommendations as to changes that are necessitated and will work with the associated branch or program as directed by the OSH project lead to ensure necessary edits and updates are made.
  • Assist in maintaining a share file repository of completed OSH (PRA)/(OMB) packages.
  • Work with the ADS office on developing and compiling information to serve as technical assistance for reviewing Data Management Plans on relevant OSH funded projects.
  • Develop internal technical assistance documents for programs to use to review Data Management Plans that are submitted by awardees.
  • Work with the ADS office to develop manuscripts and/or scientific abstracts that utilize public data shared by the Department of Defense (DOD) as part of a collaboration with OSH.
  • Participate in conference calls with DOD researchers in conjunction with and as directed by OSH ADS staff to review data analysis, discuss the progress of manuscripts and abstracts.
  • Review and assess data collected from two sources that were sponsored by or used by OSH.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing and seeing up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; occasional walking or standing, occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in an office setting. The employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities, and abilities.
Job Requirements: **
*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

  • Master’s degree or higher and at least 2 years’ experience in public health or a related field and at least two years of experience in public health or a related field.
  • Experience serving as a co-author on at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or government report (e.g., MMWR).
  • Mid-level skills using standard statistical software, such as SAS, Stata, and SUDAAN.
  • Experience analyzing publicly available complex data surveys such as NHIS, NYTS, NSDUH.
  • Experience drafting manuscripts or scientific reports for publication in MMWR or peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with working with a scientific team to develop manuscripts and/or scientific abstracts.
  • Experience with OMB/PRA preferred.
