Injury and Violence Prevention Certificate Information Session, June 9

Description

The certificate in Injury and Violence Prevention is designed to give MPH, PhD, and Candler students a foundation in theoretical and epidemiologic concepts of injury prevention and a platform for which to examine the causes, consequences, and prevention strategies used in our society. Combining multidisciplinary coursework, research, practical experience, and access to a vast injury prevention network, this certificate will broaden students’ perspectives on complex issues while preparing them to become leaders of injury prevention within their chosen discipline.

Interactive Online Workshops for Public Health Professionals, Ongoing

Description

In response to the 2020 pandemic, The Region IV Public Health Training Center’s Public Health Practice Academy skills-based workshops will now be offered online only, until further notice. Space in these no-cost workshops is very limited (~25 participants per class) and priority enrollment is for staff of local, state and tribal health departments in Region IV (AL, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC, TN). Only register if you are confident that you can participate.

These online Public Health Practice Academy workshops are not webinars. They are interactive, and learners are expected to actively participate and share their audio and video. Each participant will need a computer with webcam, microphone, speakers and internet access.

ORISE Fellow in the Surveillance and Data Science Branch in the Division of STD Prevention, CDC

Description

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Surveillance and Data Science Branch (SDSB), Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

DSTDP’s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications. The mission of SDSB is to capture STD morbidity data, assess STD burden and trends, and develop and conduct sentinel surveillance of STDs and STD adverse outcomes. These surveillance activities provide a foundation for the annual STD Surveillance Reports. Additionally, SDSB evaluates and provides recommendations for improving STD surveillance systems and provides guidance on the inclusion of STD data elements into information systems that can electronically receive, store, and transmit STD morbidity and case management data.

Research Project: Possible learning opportunities include assisting with:

  • Coordinating the tracking and management of issues that arise during data quality reviews
  • Developing innovative data visualization products for hard copy and digital publications, presentations, dashboards, and communication materials
  • Analyzing and managing data collected from multiple data sources using various methodologies
  • Developing and managing data analysis guides, data documentation, data management procedures, reports, and analysis
  • Developing SAS and R programs to conduct data analyses, data management, and data visualizations

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by May 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with using SAS, R, and PowerBI
  • Experience with using SQL
  • Strong writing and communication skills
