Society for Philosophical Inquiry into Curiosities and Ephemera
The Society for Philosophical Inquiry into Curiosities and Ephemera (SPICE) is an organization promoting scholarly research into obscure, overlooked, and comical details in texts in the history of philosophy. While our immediate interest in these details derives from curiosity, we are also committed to a kind of intellectual hedonism, and encourage the enjoyment of philosophical oddities for their own sake. Finally, we advocate the study of philosophical curiosities and ephemera as a grass-roots alternative to “top down” approaches to the history of philosophy. We maintain that larger philosophical claims can only be understood when they are reconstructed from the infinitesimally small and obscure details that compose them.
