John Ellis was announced this week as the new Deputy CIO for LITS, removing the interim designation he has held for two years.
“I’m delighted, and honored, to accept the role of Deputy CIO and the great opportunity, and responsibility, that comes with the position,” said Ellis. “Everyone has been so encouraging and supportive during the interim period. Rich (Mendola) has been especially supportive, allowing me to act and lead without ‘interim’ considerations, as have my LITS Leadership colleagues.”
The appointment has received glowing praise from members of the Emory community. “John Ellis is a great partner and his active engagement in understanding our users’ needs has made such a difference in collaboration and team work,” said Dee Cantrell, CIO for Emory Healthcare IS. Added Heather Mugg, Emory Associate Vice Provost, “John has collaborated closely with Enrollment Services and he is a tremendous asset to the University.”
John came to Emory in November of 2003 as co-director of Academic Technologies and has since held multiple leadership positions, most recently serving as Director of Integration. In that role he directed IT Service Management, Marketing & Communications, Identity Management, Web Hosting, and Integration Middleware.
Starting his career as an academician, John taught philosophy for a decade at the University of Memphis before moving into administration full-time. He has enjoyed a wide range of positions in Information Technology over the years and brings a perspective informed by academic as well as IT-related experiences at multiple levels of the organization.
John received his PhD in philosophy from King’s College London and a BA in philosophy and Greek from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He grew up in North Carolina, mostly in the Wilmington area, but spends a lot of his leisure time these days in the NC mountains.
