New Hazardous Waste Regulations have recently been adopted; here are the current guidelines for hazardous chemical waste management implemented by the Emory Environmental Health and Safety Office:

  1. AFFIX a completed Hazardous Waste Label; list all primary chemical constituents and their percentages.
  2. AFFIX all Globally Harmonized System (GHS) pictograms that define the hazard of the chemical (flammable, corrosive, etc.). The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) may be used to determine the appropriate pictograms that best represent the hazard class of container contents.
  3. Containers MUST BE CLOSED except when new contents are being added.
  4. SECONDARY containment is required for liquid wastes (leak proof bin or tray).
  5. Annual Research Lab Safety TRAINING must be completed for all personnel that handle chemical waste. Research Lab Safety training is available in BioRAFT.
