Open Education Week (OE Week) is a key event that brings together educators, students, policymakers, and technologists from across the globe to celebrate the benefits of open education. Taking place March 3–7, 2025, Open Education Week marks a critical moment in the global education landscape—one that emphasizes the importance of making education more inclusive, accessible, and equitable for all learners. With the growing focus on open educational resources (OER) and the open access movement, this week offers an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the challenges ahead in creating a more equitable learning environment worldwide.

What is Open Education?

At its core, open education is about removing barriers to learning and empowering students, educators, and communities to freely access, share, and modify educational materials. Open education practices are grounded in principles of collaboration, innovation, and access. This movement is built upon Open Educational Resources (OER)—teaching, learning, and research materials that are freely available and openly licensed, allowing anyone to use, adapt, and distribute them without restriction.

Emory boasts a growing collection of diverse OER authored by Emory researchers. Tien Chih, mathematics professor, has created Linear Optimization: A Geometric Inquiry Course. A longtime advocate for OER, Dr. Chih is a fellow in the PROSE consortium, a community of people committed to developing and authoring open source resources for education, particularly in STEM. He uses PreTeXt, an authoring language similar to xml which can output in multiple formats, extensively in his multiple OERs. Dr. Chih has authored Team Based Statistics, and co-authored Calculus for Team-Based Inquiry Learning. He is finalizing his current work, Linear Optimization: A Geometric Inquiry Course.
