Job Description

Works under the limited supervision of the RLHO Analytics and Information Management (AIM) Unit Manager and under guidance by the Syndromic Surveillance Team Lead, serves as the Epidemiologist for the Texas Syndromic Surveillance System (TxS2), a statewide system hosted by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). The Epidemiologist II has considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Designs and implements surveillance processes for disease outbreaks and oversees the analysis of syndromic surveillance data for the State. Develops educational materials and operational manuals, and provides training and guidance to epidemiologists in the eight health service regions and local health departments across the State. Provides consultation and coordinates with hospitals and other data submitters regarding data use agreements and data transmission. Provides consultation and coordinates with local health departments for potential disease outbreaks and system functionality. Assists the Team Lead by coordinating with health service regions for input to the Syndromic Surveillance Governance Council. Prepares briefings for the senior and executive level staff. Provides daily briefings to the Syndromic Surveillance Team Lead and the AIM Unit Manager for disease situational awareness.

Desired Skills 

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and methods of epidemiology and the epidemiology of infectious disease.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of state laws pertaining to disease reporting and the prevention and control of communicable disease.
  • Considerable knowledge of current social, economic, and public health issues relevant to public health.
  • Considerable knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory test interpretation.
  • Considerable knowledge of educational program development and implementation.
  • Excellent skills in using word processing, database, spreadsheet, statistical, and graphics software packages (e.g., Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, SAS)
  • Strong skills in public speaking, writing and editing.
  • Skill in mathematical and statistical computations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others by oral and written communications.
  • Ability to plan and direct epidemiological aspects of disease surveillance programs.
  • Ability to plan, direct, and report on epidemiological investigations in syndromic surveillance.
  • Ability to analyze situations and determine course of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external customers.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising sound judgment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
