Position Description 

The NYC DOHMH’s Bureau of Health Promotion for Justice-Impacted Populations is currently recruiting a Senior Research Associate to support surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation activities across the Bureau. The ideal candidate will have a masters or doctorate degree in public health, experience with health services research, strong program management and quantitative and qualitative research skills, and experience and interest in working with justice-impacted populations.

Responsibilities 

  • Work as part of a team dedicated to promoting the behavioral and physical health of justice-impacted populations by using and integrating health services, financial, epidemiological and surveillance data to develop evidence-based public health policies and programs.
  • Participate in developing a surveillance, monitoring and evaluation strategy to support the work of BHPJIP, including leading and conducting high-level analytic activities to inform Bureau policy and program interventions, including:
    • Characterizing the behavioral, mental and physical health of people with a history of justice involvement living in the community and of justice-impacted populations.
    • Identifying and monitoring behavioral, mental and physical health disease trends.
    • Evaluating behavioral, mental and physical health care and program gaps.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to identify, integrate, and analyze available health information and health outcomes data for underserved populations in New York City.
  • Participate in the coordination of research activities, including database management, data analysis and reporting.
  • Prepare written documents, including manuscripts, memos, reports, and presentations.
  • Participate in special studies and activities as assigned and other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Surveillance, Monitoring and Evaluation, the Assistant Commissioner of BHPJIP, or their designee.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health)
    • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
  • To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
    • 1) A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
    • 2) A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization
    • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in “2” above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in “1” and “2” above.
