COVID-19 Epidemiology Fellows Program, ECRC

Opportunity Description

The Rollins School of Public Health Covid-19 Epidemiology Fellows Program is designed for recent Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates in epidemiology or a related concentration who are interested in the epidemiologic response to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects in Georgia.

Coordinated through the Emory Covid-19 Response Collaborative at the Emory Rollins School of Public Health and offered in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Public Health, this two-year service and training fellowship aims to bolster Georgia’s epidemiologic capacity.

 

Job Description

  • Each fellow will be assigned to serve as an epidemiologist within one of Georgia’s 18 health districts or to the Georgia Department of Public Health.
  • While fellows’ primary day-to-day responsibilities will be assigned by their site supervisors, fellows will be given additional support and training by fellowship program staff in topics such as managerial techniques, epidemiologic resources and career development.
  • Fellows can expect about 90% of their effort to be devoted to hands-on applied epidemiology as assigned by their site supervisors and about 10% effort devoted to engaging in activities provided by the fellowship program through continuing education training, management training, seminar/speaker series, and e-learning.
  • The long-term goal of the fellowship program is to cultivate talented epidemiologists well-equipped to address the current Covid-19 crisis and eager to apply their knowledge, creativity and passion to a career in epidemiology that extends beyond Covid-19.
  • While fellows will be employees of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of their fellowship, fellows will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within one of Georgia’s 18 health districts or within the state health department located in Atlanta. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in public health, a master’s of science degree in public health or health education, or a master’s in development practice from an accredited school.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s of Public Health graduates of accredited schools or programs of public health in Georgia and the Southeast are encouraged to apply.
  • MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology
  • Closely supervised work experience demonstrating competence in conducting public health surveillance, analyzing surveillance data, reporting analytic results, and conducting outbreak investigations.

Data Analyst IV – The Laboratory and Infectious Disease Services (LIDS) Division seeks a Data Analyst IV for Public Health Informatics and Data Exchange Group with a strong epidemiologic methods background and to oversee a dynamic team of public health professionals. The Data Analyst provides advanced (senior-level) research and analysis work by planning, conducting, and reporting on projects for the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS). Experienced in program evaluation utilizing multiple methods of data collection and analyses. Experienced in working with large data sets, health-related data, and programming languages such as SAS.

 

Essential Job Functions

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

  • (35%) Serves as team lead for group of epidemiologists responsible for continuous assessment of NEDSS data quality validation, data quality assurance, data integrity, and coordinating and liaising with various disease programs who contribute data feeds to NEDSS. Reviews and validates all the statistical logics involved in data cleaning and management process to ensure consistency, integrity, and accuracy of data. Oversees the development, update, and maintenance of data dictionaries, data quality assurance documentation, and data management guidelines. Responsible for designing evaluation plans including development of evaluation designs, goals and objectives, project timelines, and instruments. Support visualization of data using various approaches to enable identification of inconsistent data patterns and data quality concerns and for public health results reporting. Oversees data documentations, protocols, analytic plans, reports, manuscripts and presentation of study findings applying epidemiologic methods and best practices in public health science. Provides guidance and appropriate training to epi team and ensures epi team are informed on latest guidance.
  • (25%) Works in concert with staff from other areas of LIDS and DSHS and with staff from local and regional health departments. Assists in running statewide proficiency tests and provides feedback to NEDSS users. Assists in leading communications between the epidemiology teams within LIDS and epidemiology areas related to NEDSS. Contributes to the development of data standards, addressing privacy and data reliability concerns, as well as playing an active role in agency-wide data integration projects. Represents the NEDSS on committees, workgroups, and projects to meet research and data analysis needs. Represents the state at the national level on research and data analysis issues. Applies the principles and methods of epi to provide the epidemiologic component of grant proposals and progress reports.
  • (20%) Oversees and contributes to epidemiologic reports useful to NEDSS and DSHS staff, the public, public health, and medical communities. Assists, directs, conducts or participates in epidemiological studies and investigations of infectious diseases. Assembles appropriate epidemiological and laboratory resources to address disease outbreak investigations. Performs statistical analyses using advanced statistical software, interprets results, and writes articles, and reports. Analyzes data and proposes epidemiological studies based upon data gathered through surveillance projects and studies. Ensures appropriate communication and dissemination of findings and recommendations. Develops and implements new policies, protocols, and practices within NEDSS for quality assessment of the data accessed to ensure that scientific and standardized systems and processes are implemented uniformly across the Division
  • (15%) Serves as resource scientist/consultant and provides scientific/technical expertise to the NEDSS and other areas in DSHS, other agencies, and/or the general public in matters related to epidemiology and surveillance. Prepares written manuscripts for publication in peer review journals. Using power Point and other presentation tools, prepares and conducts oral presentations on infectious disease topics and outbreak response plans to various audiences. Assists in the preparation of summary reports for distribution to local and regional health departments.

Initial Selection Criteria

  •  MPH with two (2) years of experience in applied public health.

Epidemiologic Research Analyst, National Cancer Institute

Description

Seeking an individual with either a master’s degree in epidemiology (or related field) or comparable experience to work on descriptive epidemiology projects with Dr. Meredith Shiels in the Infections and Immunoepidemiology Branch in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, an intramural component of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Potential research projects include estimating trends in premature death rates over time and by cause and demographic group, excess death rates in provisional death certificate data compared to historical data, trends in cancer rates over time and disparities in both mortality and cancer trends. In addition to cancer, projects will also focus on the impact of the opioid epidemic and COVID-19 on national death rates. The open position will involve a combination of the following: study design, study management (data coding and cleaning, downloading and merging data sets, coordinating data use agreements), data analysis (statistical analysis of epidemiologic data), generation of tables and figures and preparation of reports for presentation or publication.

 

Qualifications

 Seeking individuals with either a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, or a related field, or with comparable experience. The position will involve on-the-job training in epidemiologic analyses and is suited for someone with <4 years experience post-MPH/MS. Given the extensive training involved with the position, we are seeking applicants available for at least a two-year minimum commitment.  Experience with statistical software applications used in public health research is a must; please indicate relevant software applications and degrees of competency. Post-Doctoral Fellow, University of Michigan School of Public Health

Position Overview

The EpiBayes research group, led by Dr. Jon Zelner in the Dept. of Epidemiology and Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health (CSEPH) at the University of Michigan School of Public Health seeks a postdoctoral fellow to work with us on several projects relating to the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza and estimates/projections of vaccine efficacy for both of these pathogens. Drs. Emily Martin and Arnold Monto, co-directors of the Michigan Influenza Center will serve as secondary advisors for this position along with additional collaboration from investigators in the Michigan Influenza Center and University of Michigan School of Medicine. The person holding this position will be responsible for the analysis and integration of data from a unique combination of data sources including community-based household cohort studies, clinical studies in outpatient and hospital settings, and state-wide public health surveillance of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology.

 

About the Research Group 

We are a multidisciplinary, highly-collaborative group, with close connections to other research groups performing primary data collection at the University of Michigan and other institutions. We are broadly interested in understanding and addressing the key sources of spatial and sociodemographic variation in infectious disease infection and transmission risks. Our work covers a wide array of pathogens including respiratory viruses (COVID-19, influenza, RSV), bacterial infections (tuberculosis, Meningitis B, MRSA) and pathogens causing diarrheal disease (noroviruses, E. Coli, all-cause diarrhea). The overarching theme uniting these projects is a focus on the use of cutting-edge statistical and simulation methods to understand and positively impact socioeconomic disparities in global and domestic infection risk.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will have significant experience in statistical modeling of infectious disease transmission using detailed individual level data. Candidates must hold a PhD, but field of study is flexible (e.g. epidemiology, statistics, ecology, social science) with suitability assessed primarily as a function of skills and experience.

 

Additional Details

This position can be filled immediately, but the start date is flexible. The initial term of this position will be for two years, with the possibility of extension. This position will be all-remote until June 2021, with location thereafter to be determined in collaboration with the candidate and as a function of public health conditions. Children’s Mental Health Epidemiology and Prevention Fellowship, CDC

Description 

Two fellowship opportunities are currently available with the Child Development and Disability Branch (CDDB) of the Division of Human Development and Disability (DHDD), National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

NCBDDD seeks to promote the health of babies, children, and adults with disabilities. The work of NCBDDD includes identifying the causes of birth defects, developmental disabilities, helping children to develop and reach their full potential, and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities. NCBDDD has three Divisions that carry out this mission: Division of Birth Defects and Infant Disorders (DBDID), Division of Human Development and Disability (DHDD), and Division of Blood Disorders (DBD).

These two opportunities are available within DHDD’s Child Development and Disability Branch (CDDB). DHDD leads inclusive programs to optimize the health and development of children and adults with, or at risk for, disabilities. Moreover, major priorities of the Division include a) identifying and reducing disparities in key health indicators (obesity, tobacco, etc.) among persons with disabilities; b) improving developmental outcomes of children; c) ensuring that all newborns are screened and assessed for hearing loss and receive appropriate intervention; and d) reducing disparities in health care access for persons with disabilities.

Under the guidance of mentors of the Child Development Studies Team, the selected participants will have the opportunity to train on projects related to children’s mental health and early childhood development.  The projects and activities may include: conducting analyses related to the identification and diagnosis of children’s mental disorders, associated treatment, costs of service utilization, and other factors related to the epidemiology of children’s mental disorders, with a concentration on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Tourette syndrome.

Training may also include implementing programs related to children’s mental health, neurodevelopment, and overall child development. The participants will also be able to gain experience developing summaries of new literature, abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at professional meetings. Throughout the fellowship, the participants will have opportunities to collaborate with internal and external scientific researchers, partners, and healthcare providers. The activities associated with this fellowship will include assisting the Child Development Studies team’s efforts to describe aspects of public health impact associated with healthy child development and children’s mental health.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in analysis of national survey data, administrative claims data, primary data collected using a complex sampling design, and/or longitudinal data
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in literature reviews
  • Familiarity with research methods and communications

Infectious Disease Program Manager, CSTE

For more than six decades, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have worked together in partnership to improve the public’s health by supporting the efforts of epidemiologists working at the state and local level by promoting the effective use of epidemiologic data to guide public health practice and improve health. CSTE and its members represent two of the four basic components of public health – epidemiology and surveillance. CSTE, as a member-based organization, represents the interests of applied public health epidemiologists working in state, local, tribal, and territorial settings to improve the public’s health through effective epidemiology and surveillance. Position Description

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Programs and the Deputy Director of Programs, the Manager of Infectious Disease Program is a policy-oriented but technically grounded position. The Manager of Infectious Disease Program will be responsible for the supervision of infectious disease program specific team members and overall management and administration of the program’s projects and portfolios. The Manager’s activities will consistently reflect priorities as defined in the Council’s Strategic Plan. This position will oversee projects and portfolios in topical areas including, but not limited to, advanced molecular detection (AMD) technologies, enteric diseases, healthcare-associated infections, influenza and respiratory diseases (including COVID-19), viral hepatitis, HIV, One Health, sexually-transmitted diseases, and vector-borne diseases. Applicants should have a strong background, interest, and demonstrated knowledge in infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance. Prior experience with supervision and program management are strongly preferred.    

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Senior Director of Programs and the Deputy Director of Programs in the management and administration of infectious disease projects and portfolios.
  • Provide strategic and technical oversight to projects assigned to the Infectious Disease team, including but not limited to projects associated with advanced molecular detection (AMD) technologies, enteric diseases, healthcare-associated infections, influenza and respiratory diseases (including COVID-19), viral hepatitis, HIV, One Health, sexually-transmitted diseases, and vector-borne diseases.

  • Manage cooperative agreements and monitor financial aspects of the projects assigned to the Infectious Disease team, including review and approval of purchase orders and invoices, compliance with procurement policies for contracting and funding opportunities, development of grant proposals and progress reporting, and monitoring of progress of grant-funded activities and deliverables.
  • Advise the CSTE Board, Executive Director, Senior Director of Programs, and the Deputy Director of Programs on issues of critical national, regional, or international significance.
  • Advise the Executive Director, Senior Director of Programs, and the Deputy Director of Programs on resources needed to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Infectious Disease Program and investigates mechanisms to secure those resources.
  • Identify, solidify, and maintain strong partnerships and collaboration with external stakeholders.
  • Support CSTE members’ efforts to establish national standards for infectious disease surveillance and epidemiology.

  • Develop and plan, in conjunction with relevant CSTE Committees or Task Forces, such conferences as are considered appropriate to promote enhanced interaction between the public health and topical issue communities, focusing on issues which impact epidemiologists.

 

Qualifications and Employment Requirements

  • Graduate degree in public health focusing on health policy and epidemiology from an accredited university is required, preferably with a concentration or coursework in infectious disease epidemiology or surveillance
  • Minimum of 6+ years of experience and/or demonstrated knowledge in the field of public health surveillance, epidemiology, and/or infectious disease is required
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience, including program development and management is strongly preferred
  • Project management experience is required, including demonstrated capability to work on concurrent projects with overlapping deadlines, the ability to manage time effectively, and the ability to accommodate urgent tasks in addition to normal workflow.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively describe complex concepts in easy-to-understand language, present information to a wide range of audiences, and maintain strong working relationships with diverse groups
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and local public health agencies and essential public heath functions
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, direct, control, and execute work with limited supervision and within established timeframes and budgets
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Strong computer literacy skills
  • Consensus building and meeting facilitation experience
  • Ability and willingness to travel, if required.

At-Risk Populations in Emergency Response Fellowship, CDC

A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of Science and Public Health Practice (OSPHP), Office of the Director, within the Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. CPR integrates science into CDC’s public health emergency preparedness and response activities. OSPHP is committed to increasing scientific contributions to the preparedness and response knowledge base as well as promoting the translation of science to practice.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this fellowship currently requires full telework. However, the fellow will be expected to report to campus when the current telework policy is rescinded in light of improved COVID-19 epidemic conditions in Georgia. The candidate must have reliable access to a high-speed internet connection in order to fulfill the duties required of the fellowship, including regular virtual meetings, webinars, and access to the CDC virtual network.

Previous emergencies have shown that certain groups of people face disproportionate risks during and after public health emergencies. At-risk and vulnerable populations are groups of people who may not be able to access and use the standard resources offered in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. Throughout the course of this research project, the participant will have the opportunity to assist OSPHP in understanding and advocating for the needs of at-risk/vulnerable populations in an emergency. This will include organizing meetings, workgroups and trainings, reviewing and/or contributing to presentations and papers, and synthesizing or collaborating on preparedness and response-related projects. The participant will also have opportunities to prepare and deliver written and oral briefings on the results of such research and analysis.

  • Experience in and knowledge of public health preparedness and response
  • Experience with public health practitioners at state, territorial, local and tribal public health agencies and partner organizations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience preparing scientific articles
