Graduate Research Assistant, Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics

Dr. Kevin Ward from the Department of Epidemiology is seeking a highly organized research assistant to help with tissue acquisition activities for a large prostate cancer study taking place in Georgia. Attention to detail is critical and some prior lab experience would be helpful, although it is not required. Dr. Ward leads the Georgia Cancer Registry (GCR). The GCR is participating in the largest ongoing recruitment study in the U.S. for African American prostate cancer patients. Approximately 4400 men are enrolled in the study to date in Georgia (recruitment is ongoing) and almost half of these men have authorized access to stored tissue from around the time of diagnosis. Tissue retrieval is underway with over 1000 specimens received and processed to date.

The research assistant’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • working with study staff to receive, log and de-identify tissue blocks from outside laboratories every week.

  • preparing required paperwork for the Winship Cancer Tissue & Pathology Shared Resource (CTPSR)

  • delivering de-identified blocks and pathology reports from RSPH to Winship CTPSR on a weekly basis

  • receiving sectioned slides from the Winship CTPSR as they are completed.

  • conducting quality control on the sectioned slides received and preparing shipping logs

    for outside processing partner (John Hopkins University – JHU)

  • packaging slides and de-identified pathology reports for weekly shipments to JHU

  • retrieving the original blocks from Winship CTPSR and returning them to RSPH

  • removing the de-identification labels from the blocks and preparing shipments of blocks

    back to the providing laboratories.

    This position requires on-campus work, pays $15.00/hour, and can support 10-20 hours per week. Work will be ongoing throughout the summer. Please email your resume to kward [at] emory [dot] edu if interested.


Scholarship Opportunity, Global Field Experience Financial Award

The Global Field Experience Financial Award (GFEFA) is a unique scholarship offered by the Rollins School of Public Health. GFE Financial Awards provide supplemental funding to support Rollins students’ international summer field experiences in low- and middle-income countries. The scholarship was started to encourage students interested in global health to participate in supervised field training which will facilitate the transfer of classroom knowledge into practical experiences.

Epi Scholars Program, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Since 2007, the Epi Scholars Program has provided rigorous training in applied epidemiology to stellar graduate epidemiology students at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).

The Epi Scholars program is committed to expanding the research capacities of urban health departments to improve population health, while providing a training ground for students to put theory and research into action and develop as future public health leaders.

The program offers graduate epidemiology & biostatistics students:

  • An allowance to defray expenses for a full-time 10-12 week summer internship at participating local health departments
  • Mentoring by some of the nation’s leading epidemiologists and researchers
  • Enhanced academic opportunities and seminars in methods, theory, and public health practice
  • Practical experience in statistical analysis using programs such as SAS®, SPSS®, STATA®, or SUDAAN®
  • Opportunities to present project findings to senior epidemiologists and their peers
  • Possibility of working on a publishable report/ thesis support
  • Opportunities to interact and collaborate with Epi Scholars and leading public health professionals at the NYC DOHMH

Epi Scholars program alumni have gone on to accomplish great things: present at significant public health conferences, pursue doctoral degrees and gain employment at the local and federal levels of government.

  • Epi Scholars will accept applications for the Summer 2023 session from January 15 – February 15, 2023.
  • This is a full-time work opportunity. Selected interns are expected to be available for 35 hours per week during the regular workday of the program (e.g. 9-5 pm EST).

Position Description: This faculty member seeks to hire a Graduate Research Assistant for federally-funded cancer-related projects. Primary responsibilities may include: 

  • Program and monitor online data collection instruments
  • Data collection (i.e. REDCap, interviews) and data entry
  • Conduct data analyses of participant (caregivers of pediatric cancer survivors/young adult survivors) and survivorship clinic implementation data
  • Assist with mixed methods data analyses (e.g., creation of data tables, thematic analyses)
  • Assist with administrative research tasks (i.e., research related mailings)
  • Other tasks may include: attend research meetings and assist in report and manuscript writing.

Background: SurvivorLink is an electronic personal health record controlled by cancer survivors and their families that can help them manage their healthcare across their providers. On SurvivorLink, they can store their survivor healthcare plan and other key health documents, share health records with their provider and learn about the life-long healthcare needs of cancer survivors. This project is evaluating an educational and electronic personal health record for pediatric cancer survivors (SurvivorLink) among caregivers of pediatric and young adult survivors on return to follow-up cancer care at 12 pediatric cancer centers.

Minimum Qualifications: Highly motivated, efficient, organized, detail-oriented, and interested in or experience working on research projects.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior work experience and research preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with Microsoft Office products and databases, especially Excel and REDCap, and online surveys. Experience with SPSS or SAS preferred.

Compensation:  $15/hour.

Start Date: as early as January 25, 2023

Graders Needed, BIOS520 – Clinical Trials

Information: This is an elective 2-unit course.

Qualifications: Any Year MPH/MSPH Students and PhD Students May Apply. In order to be considered for the position, you must have SAS or R programming knowledge. Previous course in clinical trials not necessary.

Duties: This position is up to 8 hours per week. Attending class is not necessary. An office hour is not needed.

This position will be responsible for grading weekly assignments, and co-grade midterm and final exams with the Instructor.

Qualitative Methods for Research in Global Health (GH 522): S1: M 3-4:50 & 5-5:50, S2: M 8-9:50am & 3-3:50pm, S3: Th 3-5:50pm

This course will provide students with the principles and skills for conducting and evaluating qualitative research. The course outlines challenges of using qualitative methods in international settings and provides guidance on fieldwork planning and implementation to prepare students for the Applied Practicum Experience.

Diabetes: a Model for Global Non-communicable Disease Prevention & Control (GH 534): M 1pm-2:50

Provides students with both context and skills in the field of diabetes, a pandemic of international public health concern, which encourages effective public health programming for diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Epidemiology and Dynamics of STDs (GH 550 / EPI 532): M 10am-11:50

This course explores the social, biologic, and public health issues of sexually transmitted diseases and their overall importance in public health. Topics include the basic biology and epidemiology of the major STDs, the implication of transmission models for prevention, and psychosocial, behavioral, and economic aspects of STD/HIV.

Monitoring & Evaluation of Global Public Health Programs (GH 560) T Th 10-11:20am + Lab section 

This course provides students with the technical skills to conceptualize and design process and impact evaluations of international public health programs or projects. Helps students understand the role of monitoring and evaluation in policy analysis, planning, program design, and management. 

Shaping a Healthy Global Food System Through Policy (GH 567): Th 10-11:50am

Determinants of food consumption are complex but heavily influenced by policy. This course will explore the policies that influence health through their shaping of local and global food systems, including state/local, national, international, and institutional policies. This course is offered on alternate spring semesters, take it while you can!

Control of food and Waterborne Diseases (GH 580): Monday-Friday, March 6-March 10, 9am-5pm

This course introduces the major disease-causing microorganisms in the environment and their transmission through water, food, and air. Describes the organisms, pathogenesis, clinical diseases, reservoirs, modes of transmission, and epidemiology and surveillance systems. Presents examples of public health impact of food borne and waterborne diseases in developing countries. 

Evidence-Based Decision Making with Principle Focus on Immunization, Infectious and Chronic Diseases (GH 584): MW 3:30-4:50pm

This course is designed to provide an overview of these processes and related deliberative bodies to help future public health professionals understand how their research and practice are used in evidence-based decision making.

FIN 503 Global and Macroeconomic Perspective

Tue/Thur 11:30 am to 12:45 pm in GBS130

The objective and goal of this course is to broaden your awareness of the impact of global economic, financial, political, and demographic trends on the business. The class provides conceptual frameworks and tools for analysis critical to conducting business in the international environment. Implications for human, as well as economic development, are discussed. The class will enable students to think globally and strategically; develop diverse perspectives on global business, the macroeconomy, and the future; and understand the increasing global connections that impact business and finance.


New Nursing Elective Course: Culture, Immigration, and Health Outcomes

Reminder to EPIs and GLEPIs: non-RSPH courses cannot count towards the credits needed for your MPH/MSPH degree.
