Position Description:

Watermark Women in STEM Scholarship, July 15

Watermark is offering two $5,000 women in STEM scholarships for the fall 2021 academic term to provide much-needed support for college students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)-related studies and careers. Epidemiologist I, Tennessee Department of Health

The Tennessee Department of Health’s Division of Family Health and Wellness (FHW) is hiring an Epidemiologist 1 in Nashville, TN. This position will be responsible for project management as well as quantitative and qualitative data collection, management, analysis, and visualization.

Food as Medicine Practicum, Grady

In 2017, Grady established the Food as Medicine (FAM) Partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Open Hand Atlanta to address food access and chronic disease among Grady patients, employees and the greater community. Through this partnership, Grady has established mobile food pharmacies at three neighborhood clinics and opened Jesse Hill Market at Grady Memorial Hospital featuring a Food Pharmacy, Teaching Kitchen, and Farmers Market. Grady is looking for 2-3 students to assist with implementation and evaluation of FAM programs, including Fresh Food Carts serving three neighborhood clinics, JHM Food Pharmacy, cooking classes, and employee wellness efforts.
Responsibilities
Practicum students will work with Grady’s Community Benefit Manager, the Food as Medicine team, and our Registered Dietitians. The primary responsibilities of practicum students will include:

  • Support JHM Food Pharmacy and Fresh Food Cart operations including planning, food packing and distribution to patients, evaluation and sustainability
  • Assist with patient and employee cooking classes and food demons in the Teaching Kitchen
  • Support FAM volunteer recruitment, onboarding and training
  • Evaluate the nutrition program currently being offered to Grady employees
  • Continue development of employee engagement opportunities related to FAM
  • Assist with required FAM reporting for research and philanthropic grants

*Attendance at Fresh Food Carts at the neighborhood clinics twice per month is required. Addresses are located here.

Timeline
The practicum may take place over one or two semesters starting August 2021 and students must work a minimum of 10 hours/week.
Grady Health System Requirements
Students must complete a background check, drug screening, and health clearance through the ACEMAPP platform at their own expense (estimated cost is $100-150).
Students must adhere to all Grady COVID precautions including universal masking, symptom screening when on campus, and social distancing. Students are required to provide their own PPE (medical mask when on campus or cloth mask when working outdoors).

Environmental Statistician ORISE Position, CDC

This position is within the Geospatial Research, Analysis and Services Program (GRASP), a program within the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). GRASP is responsible for geospatial science, analysis, visualization, and technology as applied to environmental health, site-specific exposure, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response. GRASP works with ATSDR, other CDC centers/institutes/offices, state/local health organizations, other federal agencies, international governments, academia, and advocacy groups.

GRASP OVERVIEW
The mission of GRASP is to provide leadership and expertise in the application of the concepts, methods, and tools of geography and geospatial information science to public health research and practice. The objectives of GRASP are to:

  • Research and analyze the geospatial trends and patterns associated with environmental health, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response.
  • Geospatially enable ATSDR scientists and systems with data, consulting, technology, & training.
  • Collaborate with scientists at the CDC/ATSDR and among our public health partners to address environmental health, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response issues.
  • Contribute to a vibrant geospatial community among public health professionals.
  • Embrace, leverage and promote technology.

POSITION OVERVIEW
As an environmental statistician with GIS experience, the incumbent will provide support and expertise to GRASP and its research partners in the statistical analysis of spatial data. As an environmental statistician, the incumbent will also provide support to GRASP’s Geospatial Epidemiology and Applied Research (GEAR) unit. Specific duties and responsibilities associated with this role are outlined below.
(1) Statistical Consulting & Review
a. Respond to and support internal GRASP statistical requests as they are submitted
b. Serve as a primary environmental statistician on GRASP-supported projects by providing analytic expertise and statistical support to GRASP research partners
c. Review interpretations of results from statistical analyses to ensure findings are communicated clearly and accurately based on the analysis that was completed
(2) Data Analysis, Reporting, and Management
a. Determine the most suitable sampling collection methodologies for field operations
b. Develop analytic plans and strategies for the analysis of spatial data
c. Clean and prepare data for analysis
d. Perform quality checks on data and results to ensure accuracy and consistency
e. Coordinate flow of data from data sources, to data storage (e.g., SQL database), and data use
f. Conduct spatial analyses, including spatial autocorrelation, interpolation, cluster, and regression analysis, and maintain strong documentation
g. Prepare reports of scientific data, including tables, charts, and other data visualizations
(3) Geospatial Services
a. Use geoprocessing software to explore, describe, visualize, and analyze spatial relationships thereby enabling CDC/ATSDR to better understand geospatial factors relevant to environmental exposure, infectious & chronic disease, injury, and emergency preparedness & response
b. Expand knowledge in the use of GIS and public health methods, software, tools, and data
(4) Study Design & Research
a. Provide strategic counsel, guidance, and recommendations to project partners for designing ecological and epidemiological studies
b. Contribute to original epidemiological research
(5) Project Management and Coordination
a. Coordinate with GRASP colleagues on research, project needs, and analyses
b. As needed, organize and coordinate research projects
KEYS TO SUCCESS

Join the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center for “Thinking and Communicating in Health Sciences” on June 23, 2021 from 12-1 PM EDT. Their guest speaker, Dr. Otis, is a Professor of English at Emory University. With a BS in Biochemistry, an MA in Neuroscience, a PhD in Comparative Literature, and an MFA in Fiction, she compares the creative thinking of scientific and literary writers. Otis’s research has been supported by MacArthur, Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Humboldt Fellowships. She is the author of the interdisciplinary books Banned Emotions, Rethinking Thought, Müller’s Lab, Networking, Membranes, and Organic Memory, and the novels Clean, Refiner’s Fire, Lacking in Substance, The Tantalus Letters, and The Memory Hive. She has translated Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s Vacation Stories and edited Literature and Science in the Nineteenth Century.

ORISE Environmental Epi Internship, CDC

A research opportunity is currently available with the One Health Office in the Office of the Director at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Throughout the course of this research project, the selected participant will gain experience in the field of zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases, specifically those that involve the human-animal-environment interface, One Health, and COVID-19. Specific projects involve epidemiological, programmatic, and educational projects related to the prevention and control of zoonoses, and contributing to the development of guidance for use by human and animal health and other partners that can enhance surveillance, response, and prevention of zoonoses in the US and globally.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may be involved in the following activities:

  • Contributing to One Health activities related to human-animal-environment interface issues, COVID-19, emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, pandemic preparedness, and outbreak response
  • Assisting in the development of resources to support partners to address zoonotic diseases, including COVID-19
  • Developing data analysis plans and analyzing data collected from epidemiological studies and information collected from human and animal health partners 
  • Developing visualizations from data gathered from epidemiological studies and surveillance activities 
  • Collaborating to support the development of resources for pandemic planning and guidance development for companion animals, zoo animals, wildlife, and livestock 
  • Conducting systematic reviews and literature searches to support the development of evidence-based recommendations related to COVID-19 and One Health
  • Maintaining accurate records of process-specific objectives, timelines, outcomes, and deliverables
  • Writing and editing summary of evidence documents and prevention recommendations
  • Collaborating with One Health groups (both internal and external to CDC), professional human, animal, and environmental health societies, local, state and city health departments, international organizations and governments, non-governmental organizations, and community-based organizations, and others

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 1, 2021

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed for an additional four years upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by August 1, 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills

  • Knowledge and understanding of One Health, public health, and epidemiological principles
  • Basic skills in oral and written communication, including experience with writing and editing documents and making presentations to scientific and non-scientific communities
  • Competency in quality management system procedures and database software (Adobe Professional, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access)
  • Knowledge and experience in web-based analysis tools 
  • Intermediate data analytical skills (e.g., mathematical or statistical modeling)
  • Intermediate or higher knowledge of a statistical programming language (e.g. R, SAS)
  • Ability to search and assess scientific literature (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, etc)
