ARC Quantitative Tutor Hours, Spring 2020

Quantitative tutors work with students to understand epidemiological and statistical concepts and methods introduced in their coursework, apply these concepts to their research projects, and provide support for students conducting quantitative analyses.  The tutors’ goal is for the student to understand concepts and methods so the student can apply this knowledge to the student’s own work.  Tutors are familiar with SAS and R Programming Languages.

ARC Quantitative Tutor drop-in hours for Spring 2020 are as follows: 

Wednesdays: 9-12 and 1-3 with Zerleen in P51 (beginning next week)

Thursdays: 10-12 and 1-4 with Lasha in P51 (beginning 1/30)

MCH Epidemiologist Supervisor, Montana DPHHS

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has an opening for an MCH Epidemiologist Supervisor in the Family and Community Health Bureau. This position will oversee the Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Unit within the Epidemiology and Data Support Section. The MCH Epidemiologist Supervisor will be responsible for serving as the Project Director and Lead Epidemiologist for the Montana Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) as well as supervising the data system and epidemiology staff supporting the Montana Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant (MCHBG). The MCH Epidemiology Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of MCHBG program needs assessments and evaluations, continuous quality improvement activities, and the design of data collections to monitor MCHBG program performance measures. As the lead PRAMS Epidemiologist, the MCH Epidemiologist Supervisor will be responsible for authoring PRAMS surveillance reports and serving as the subject matter expert on the PRAMS dataset for all internal and external partners using PRAMS.

Community Health Educator, Maryland Department of Health

Job Description 

This position will provide expertise and technical assistance on injury-related issues, including data, evaluation, policy, and intervention strategies for the Center for Injury and Sexual Assault Prevention, as well as for the Environmental Health Bureau, as a whole. This position will lead and facilitate program and grant development, implementation and evaluation. This position will also provide leadership and direction for internal programs, such as Kids in Safety Seats (KISS) and Core State Violence and Injury Prevention programs, in addition to external partners, such as State and federal agencies, local health departments and community-based organizations.

Minimum Qualifications 

Education: A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education or Health Science.

Experience: Three years of experience in planning, developing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating public health education programs, including one year of experience managing community health education projects and one year of experience at the supervisory level of planning, developing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating community health educational work.

Desired Qualifications 

The desired candidate should have experience with unintentional injury prevention, as well as experience in the Public Health field. He/she should also have experience monitoring contracts and procurements. Finally, the desired candidate should have experience writing grants, position papers for legislation and/or State and federal reports.

As a paid environmental health intern in the Division of Health and the Environment, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on industry experience while being exposed to challenging projects and learning from some of the top experts in the field. Interns will be exposed to a depth and breadth of expertise and knowledge through events and programs throughout the summer. Our summer internship program consists of a robust and structured curriculum that encompasses professional development opportunities, networking events, and a mentorship program. Key Roles and Responsibilities
 
  • Conduct literature reviews and perform data extraction on chemical exposures and health effects
  • Develop and maintain databases of the literature searched
  • Summarize and critically evaluate the results of environmental epidemiological and toxicological studies
  • Research and summarize various documents, reports, and related materials
  • Assist with preparation for meetings, and scheduling and set up
  • Assist with social media efforts and building visibility of project online
  • Assists with maintaining up to date records for program budget
 
Department / Division Qualifications
 
  • Is currently enrolled in an graduate level degree program
  • Ideal candidates will have academic or work experience in environmental health, risk assessment, toxicology or environmental epidemiology
  • Familiarity with federal government chemical risk assessment procedures
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail
 
Program Minimum Qualifications
 
  • Has completed at least two years of college coursework
  • Has excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Is available to work full-time throughout the 10 week internship
  • Is eligible to work in the United States
  • Transitioning military are encouraged to apply

HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is accepting applications for our Summer 2020 internship session.

The program is open to undergraduate, graduate and professional school students of public health, health education, laboratory sciences, medicine, social work, environmental engineering, public administration, accounting, mathematics, computer science, law, nursing, the social sciences, and many other majors.  HRTP offers dynamic internships in public health research, community health outreach and education, fieldwork, laboratory work and public health administration.

The application period for our summer 2020 session will be open from January 15 – February 15, 2020.

For full consideration, HRTP should receive the following or postmarked on/before the February 15th deadline:

  3. A personal statement/ essay

Spring 2020 Course, Evidence-Based Decision Making

Course Description

GH584 – “Evidence-based decision making” is a course where we critically assess (a) what is data, (b) how do we use it for policy and recommendation development in both the US and global settings, and (c) what are the implications of these recommendations and how they change over time.  Enrollment is open to students in all departments, as we want different perspectives on how these recommendations are made and how they impact different aspects of global health.
