A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Partnerships and Evaluation Branch (PEB), Division of Health Informatics and Surveillance (DHIS), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Our mission at DHIS is to provide leadership and cross-cutting support in developing public health information systems, managing public health surveillance programs, and provisioning health related data required to monitor, control and prevent the occurrence and spread of diseases and other adverse health conditions. The selected candidate will learn about, and participate in conducting analytic projects using large administrative health care datasets such as insurance claims data, electronic medical records, hospital discharge data, and others.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the research participant will have the opportunity to:
- Develop and participate in research and epidemiological studies related to the use of different acquired data sources
- Provide data management and analytic expertize for both new and ongoing research projects
- Conduct literature reviews and summaries to support analytic projects
- Assist with data management and conduct analyses using statistical software and other analytic tools
- Contribute to the development of presentations and publications to disseminate research findings for both internal and external audiences
- Participate in different webinars, trainings, and meetings as recommended by his or her supervisor
- Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to creatively solve problems
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, GA, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Qualifications
The qualified candidate must have received a master’s degree in public health or a related field, with an emphasis on quantitative analytic skills and epidemiological methods. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Experience using statistical software, such as SAS or R, for data cleaning and analysis
- Knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods
- Experience reviewing and summarizing scientific information for dissemination or sharing with other scientists
- Good written and oral communication skills
