Scholarship Opportunity, Global Field Experience Financial Award

The Global Field Experience Financial Award (GFEFA) is a unique scholarship offered by the Rollins School of Public Health. GFE Financial Awards provide supplemental funding to support Rollins students’ international summer field experiences in low- and middle-income countries. The scholarship was started to encourage students interested in global health to participate in supervised field training which will facilitate the transfer of classroom knowledge into practical experiences.

The planned timeline for the GFE Award is as follows:

Please note that the student will typically receive reward funds 6-9 weeks after they have provided the necessary account information and completed the Award Acceptance Agreement. The award is meant to supplement the student’s funds. The GFE Award will typically NOT cover all costs that the students will incur for the international project.

Epi Scholars Program, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Since 2007, the Epi Scholars Program has provided rigorous training in applied epidemiology to stellar graduate epidemiology students at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).

The Epi Scholars program is committed to expanding the research capacities of urban health departments to improve population health, while providing a training ground for students to put theory and research into action and develop as future public health leaders.

The program offers graduate epidemiology & biostatistics students:

• An allowance to defray expenses for a full-time 10-12 week summer internship at participating local health departments
• Mentoring by some of the nation’s leading epidemiologists and researchers
• Enhanced academic opportunities and seminars in methods, theory, and public health practice
• Practical experience in statistical analysis using programs such as SAS®, SPSS®, STATA®, or SUDAAN®
• Opportunities to present project findings to senior epidemiologists and their peers
• Possibility of working on a publishable report/ thesis support
• Opportunities to interact and collaborate with Epi Scholars and leading public health professionals at the NYC DOHMH

Epi Scholars program alumni have gone on to accomplish great things: present at significant public health conferences, pursue doctoral degrees and gain employment at the local and federal levels of government.

• Epi Scholars will accept applications for the Summer 2023 session from January 15 – February 15, 2023.
• This is a full-time work opportunity. Selected interns are expected to be available for 35 hours per week during the regular workday of the program (e.g. 9-5 pm EST).

Position Description: This faculty member seeks to hire a Graduate Research Assistant for federally-funded cancer-related projects. Primary responsibilities may include: 

• Program and monitor online data collection instruments
• Data collection (i.e. REDCap, interviews) and data entry
• Conduct data analyses of participant (caregivers of pediatric cancer survivors/young adult survivors) and survivorship clinic implementation data
• Assist with mixed methods data analyses (e.g., creation of data tables, thematic analyses)
• Assist with administrative research tasks (i.e., research related mailings)
• Other tasks may include: attend research meetings and assist in report and manuscript writing.

Background: SurvivorLink is an electronic personal health record controlled by cancer survivors and their families that can help them manage their healthcare across their providers. On SurvivorLink, they can store their survivor healthcare plan and other key health documents, share health records with their provider and learn about the life-long healthcare needs of cancer survivors. This project is evaluating an educational and electronic personal health record for pediatric cancer survivors (SurvivorLink) among caregivers of pediatric and young adult survivors on return to follow-up cancer care at 12 pediatric cancer centers.

Minimum Qualifications: Highly motivated, efficient, organized, detail-oriented, and interested in or experience working on research projects.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior work experience and research preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with Microsoft Office products and databases, especially Excel and REDCap, and online surveys. Experience with SPSS or SAS preferred.

Compensation:  $15/hour.

Graders Needed, BIOS520 – Clinical Trials

Information: This is an elective 2-unit course.

Qualifications: Any Year MPH/MSPH Students and PhD Students May Apply. In order to be considered for the position, you must have SAS or R programming knowledge. Previous course in clinical trials not necessary.

Duties: This position is up to 8 hours per week. Attending class is not necessary. An office hour is not needed.

This position will be responsible for grading weekly assignments, and co-grade midterm and final exams with the Instructor.

Additionally, we have adjusted our timelines to accommodate feedback from universities that students need to confirm their internships far in advance. Can I apply for multiple seasons at the same time? Yes. When you submit your application, you can state availability for a summer and/or fall and/or winter/spring internship. If we are unable to offer you an internship for summer, we may have availability for the fall or winter/spring. However, placement in a different season is not guaranteed and is contingent on the needs of the DMCHWD and each candidate’s application. Can I still apply if the internship is not required by my university? Yes. On your Statement of Availability, please note that your university does not have a time commitment, but include the amount of time you would be able to commit. NOTE: An official university representative will be required to validate your status as a student and sign the HRSA Student Volunteer Agreement even if you are not using the internship toward your program’s requirements. Does the Maternal and Child Health Bureau offer any other internships? HRSA offers opportunities for Public Health Interns to complete a one-semester rotation within one of HRSA’s Bureaus or Offices, including the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The public health internship at HRSA is an unpaid practicum experience for graduate and undergraduate students in good standing at schools of public health and public health programs in the United States.
