EPI Department Journal Club Meeting

We are excited to announce that the Epidemiology Journal Club will host its first meeting of the year on Monday, 2/5 from 12-1PM in GCR L35! The Epidemiology Journal Club fosters a safe space to discuss, analyze, and critique public health literature and is open to students in ALL departments. Bi-weekly meetings to discuss student led presentations on journal articles related to anything epidemiology Every other Monday from 12 – 1 pm. In GCR L35. Future meetings will take place on 2/19, 3/25, and 4/8.


Leveraging Emotional Intelligence and Diversity in Public Health Webinar, Region IV Public Health Training Center

This is a live webinar on February 9, 2024, from 12-1:30 pm ET. Participants will use Zoom to join.

During this 90-minute webinar we will explore what it means to develop your emotional intelligence across lines of difference. In addition to reviewing the foundational EQ (Emotional Quotient) framework developed by Goleman (1995), we will explore the emotional intelligence and diversity model developed by Gardenswartz, Cherbosque, and Rowe (2010). Public health professionals attending this webinar will understand how EQ influences their own worldview, gain insights into others’ perceptions and the importance of managing emotions and building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, intellects, and cultural perspectives. The webinar will conclude with strategies to create environments where public health efforts can succeed, and diversity can thrive.

Emily Saunders, EdD, has been supporting various leadership and professional development initiatives at the University of Georgia for over 17 years. As part of the Community Leadership Program team, she specializes in creating and delivering programs to support individual and group learning, with a particular interest in women’s leadership development, organization development, creativity, and innovation. Emily is a certified FourSight® mindset facilitator and holds a Foundations of Design Thinking certificate. She also coaches clients using the Hogan Assessment and Global Leadership Profile.

Before joining the Fanning Institute, she co-created and taught professional development and internship courses, worked with numerous student leadership groups, launched two mentoring programs and a university-wide onboarding series, managed multiple alumni boards, and oversaw a successful annual giving program. She is also a 2017 graduate of the inaugural class of the University of Georgia’s Women’s Staff Leadership Institute. ​ ​

Learning Objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how emotional intelligence influences their worldview
  • Discuss the importance of managing emotions and building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, intellects, and cultural perspectives
  • Identify at least 2 strategies to create environments in which public health efforts can succeed and diversity can thrive

CERTIFICATE: The course contains two modules: a module to access the webinar and an evaluation module. After accessing both modules, learners will earn a certificate of completion.

Data Scientist (Integrated Prevention), US Army Reserve Command

About the Position: This position is with the United States Army Reserve Command, Army Reserve G-1, Services and Support Division, Integrated Prevention Advisory Group (I-PAG) located at Fort Liberty, North Carolina.

Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a senior Data Analyst for the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) Integrated Prevention Program Initiatives with the mission to reduce or eliminate incidents of harmful behaviors through predictive analytics.
  • Lead development of process for data collection and analysis of prevention activities.
  • Conduct statistical analysis of enterprise-wide data from primary prevention initiatives.
  • Develop analytical plans to shape the organization’s data infrastructure, inclusive of data warehousing, reporting and analytics platforms.
  • Support the development of proposals and projects that align with primary prevention research and policy goals for data science research and analytic projects.
  • Participate with scientists and program managers both in various aspects of the study or survey design process.
  • Collaborate with statistical, data science, public health professionals in collection, linkage, processing, coding, classification, analysis of public health surveillance; research, admin data related to primary prevention program initiatives.
  • Summarize information from statistical analysis for wide dissemination and to facilitate information sharing.
  • Extract information, conduct analysis and develop reports or presentations using advanced analytical and visualization techniques.
  • Utilize analytics software, tools, emerging technology, various data sources to perform exploratory analyses on new/archival data sources to improve data reliability, efficiency, quality for analysis missions, organizational goals, future planning.

Since 2007, the Epi Scholars Program has provided rigorous training in applied epidemiology to stellar graduate and professional epidemiology and biostatistics students at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).  

On behalf of the HRTP and Epi Scholars team, We would like to cordially your students to learn about internship opportunities at the NYC Health Department through the Epi Scholars Program.
Graduate epidemiology and biostatistics students, career service and development representatives, advisors, professors, and all who wish to learn more about the program are welcome to attend. 

About the Epi Scholars Program: 

The Epi Scholars program is a full-time, paid, 10 – 12 week summer internship program for top graduate epidemiology and biostatistics students at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Scholars receive supplemental training from senior researchers including training in theory, methods, and public health practice to enhance their understanding of the root causes of disease.  

The Epi Scholars program is accepting applications for the Summer 2024 session from January 15 – February 15, 2024.

Student Scholarships Available, ETS

Each year, ETS provides scholarships as a way of creating college access for disadvantaged students and recognizing academic achievement. These scholarships directly impact undergraduate and graduate students based on the criteria they represent.

The ETS Presidential Scholarships for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Students are awarded to rising juniors or seniors enrolled in public and private HBCUs who demonstrate high academic achievement and financial need.

Research Scientist 4 (Epidemiology), New York State Department of Health

Responsibilities:

Develop the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) scientific research plans, grant applications and Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval applications 

Develop NYS Department of Health PRAMS Program scientific research plans to support statewide maternal and child health data needs, and grant applications in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) PRAMS Request for Applications;

Prepare CDC annual renewal applications (e.g., interim progress reports and continuation applications); • Apply for and obtain IRB approvals, inform IRB of procedural changes and other revisions, and obtain annual continuation approvals; and

Participate in CDC research team meetings, site visits, training programs, and workshops.

Public Health Internship Program, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is now accepting applications for our Summer 2024 internship session.

The program is open to undergraduate, graduate and professional school students of public health, health education, laboratory sciences, medicine, social work, environmental engineering, public administration, accounting, mathematics, computer science, law, nursing, the social sciences, and many other majors.  HRTP offers dynamic internships in public health research, community health outreach and education, fieldwork, laboratory work and public health administration.

The application period for our Summer 2024 session is open from January 15 – February 15, 2024

For consideration, applications must be submitted in full by the application deadline.

Research Projects Manager, School of Medicine – Dermatology

Job Description:

  • Responsible for managing complex research projects. Using an advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, assists in the planning and development of survey instruments, guidelines and procedures to collect required data.
  • Coordinates various aspects of the study.
  • Drafts and may edit text for studies. Analyzes data, identifies data discrepancies and researches and identifies causes.
  • May perform statistical analysis of numerical data.
  • Actively contributes to the development of research protocols.
  • Determines how research methodologies or tools must be modified.
  • Ensures that study data and systems are maintained and accurately documented.
  • Analyzes data and develops reports to assess or monitor study performance and treatment results; may develop associated operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  • May oversee regulatory compliance efforts.
  • May develop and submit grant proposals and advise principal investigator of changes in reporting or accounting requirements.
  • May monitor expenses and receipts for active protocols.
  • Coordinates and conducts special meetings and presentations.
  • Coordinates computer support for ancillary studies conducted at off-site locations.
  • Collaborates on reports and papers.
  • Assists in the preparation of tables and graphs for publication and presentation.
  • May design and develop databases related to specific programs at the request of supervisor and/or Principal Investigator.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  •  A master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology, and psychology or related discipline and two years of professional level research experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced proficiency in Qualtrics or RedCap.
  • Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and analysis.
  • Experience in patient recruitment, study coordination, and IRB protocol submission.
  • Proficiency in remote work with multiple supervisors with high levels of initiative and accountability.
  •  Recruitment, coordination, and data collection for investigator-initiated and sponsored studies.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee
