Public Health Fellowship in Government, APHA

The American Public Health Association, is now accepting applications for the 2020 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government. This is the 11th year APHA is offering this fellowship, which has been described as an “amazing,” “phenomenal” and “life altering” experience by previous fellows.

Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be able to spend one year in Washington, D.C. The fellow will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.

Training for the fellowship will begin in January 2020, so you must be able to move to the Washington, D.C., area in January and stay through December 2020. The fellowship provides a unique learning experience and demonstrates the value and need for basing policy on sound science. Throughout the year, the fellow will gain a practical knowledge of government and how the public policy process works.

To be eligible for the Fellowship, candidates must meet all of the following criteria:

1. be an APHA member.

2. have a graduate degree in public health or a related discipline.

3. have at least five years’ experience as a public health professional beyond graduate or medical training.

4. be a citizen of the U.S. or its territories or have permanent residence status in the U.S.

Professional Healthcare Worker – Epidemiology

Description
The Georgia Department of Public Health is the lead agency entrusted by the people of the state of Georgia with the ultimate responsibility for the health of communities and the entire population.

The agency is seeking three (3) highly qualified candidates for the position of Professional Healthcare Worker within the Epidemiology Section/Office.

The incumbents will be employed for approximately 15-20 hours per week. The pay will be $14 an hour. The schedule is flexible, but the employees must conduct interviews, enter data, and perform other activities at the Department of Public Health offices in downtown Atlanta during normal business hours for more than half of the total weekly work time. Additional interviews and duties can be conducted during weeknight and weekend hours. This job can potentially include more hours during the summer and holiday breaks.

Job Responsibilities
The Georgia Department of Public Health is looking for three (3) current MPH students or an incoming MPH-seeking students to assist in patient interviewing, data entry, data collection, data management, medical chart reviews, and other clerical work. These positions include calling cases and controls to conduct interviews related to communicable disease surveillance, special studies, and outbreaks. Data entry and management responsibilities will include using various databases, such as Excel, Access, and the Georgia electronic notifiable disease system. Although the person(s) filling these positions will have the opportunity to learn about notifiable disease surveillance in general, the focus will be following up on reportable enteric disease cases and invasive bacterial disease surveillance conducted by the Emerging Infections Program.

These positions could fulfill MPH practicum requirements. As part of a practicum experience, the students will:
1. Gain an understanding of how notifiable disease surveillance functions.
2. Understand how outbreak investigations are conducted.
3. Have an opportunity to analyze notifiable disease surveillance, study, and/or outbreak data.

These positions are temporary and intended for students enrolled in an accredited public health degree program as the intention of the job duties is to provide applied public health knowledge and skills. These positions are also limited to 2 years contingent on availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and one year of work related experience

Four years of work related experience at an executive level

The Task Force for Global Health is seeking an Associate Director of The Neglected Tropical Diseases Support Center (NTD-SC) Program.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Neglected Tropical Diseases Support Center (NTD-SC) supports operational research on shared issues confronting 5 diseases using funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and USAID. The mission of the NTD-SC is to provide the technical assistance and problem-solving research necessary to ensure a strong scientific base for the massive global public health effort currently underway to eliminate NTDs. The Associate Director of Programs leads the specific research initiatives of NTD-SC by providing technical and strategic guidance across projects from the design phase, data gathering, analysis, and writing of report.

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Directs the planning, development, and operations of a program with the Task Force for Global Health.
Collaborates with representatives from private, government, and international agencies.
Plans, executes, and monitors program budgets, including approval of expenditures; prepares annual financial and program reports to external parties with interests in the program.
May engage in fundraising initiatives on behalf of the program.
Ensures that the program is in compliance with federal and international laws and regulations.
Oversees program communications, including development of communications strategies, development of key program messages, production of print and electronic materials, and reputation management.
Represents the program in various national and international fora, and actively engages with representatives from other NGO’s for purposes of conducting research and designing new initiatives.
May supervise program staff.
Performs other related duties as required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct the research effort related to specific operational research topics, coordinating with international partners, stakeholders, investigators and funders
Facilitate research partnerships with NTD focal points at the ministries of health.
Represent the NTD-SC at technical scientific and country review meetings
Design and develop protocols to address key research questions identified by the NTD community.
Develop training materials and lead in-country trainings on research protocols for ministries of health and partners.
Clean, analyze, interpret and disseminate data from NTD-SC supported studies.
Direct the operational research team for all the NTD-SC projects on which they are acting as a Research Lead, providing technical oversight.
Collaborate closely with the operations, finance and project management teams.
Contribute technical content to NTD-SC grant proposals and donor reports.
Provide leadership on priority NTD-SC research objectives, including reaching consensus on study protocols, the coordination of multi-country studies, communicating study objectives and preliminary findings at technical meetings and translating the findings into WHO policy recommendations.
Provide technical expertise and guidance to representatives from the donor community, international organizations and country programs, as needed.
Write publishable papers and develop polished tools.
May manage student workers and interns throughout the year.
Participate fully as a member of the Task Force by contributing, assisting and participating in projects, activities, and initiatives as requested by management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in field related to specific program as indicated
AND

Six years program related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or related field with at least 5 years of related experience
Proficient in French
Excellent writing skills and a proven record of publications
Substantial field experience in developing countries
Experience with advance statistical analysis and statistics software packages
Experience leading trainings and research in developing countries

The Senior Healthcare Data Analyst will join the Clinical Analytics team which is part of the Partners Data and Analytics Organization (DAO). In this role, he/she will provide data analysis and reporting for all partners-wide clinical initiatives. Areas of focus will include quality improvement, specialty variation, population health and safety initiatives. This role requires working with multiple sources of healthcare data (ex: claims, financial, and clinical data) to meet both internal and external reporting requirements and support new initiatives. Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Build and foster relationships with senior leadership/physicians and key stakeholders to understand multifaceted business problems and develop analytical solutions to complex issues to satisfy reporting and analytical needs
• Retrieving, organizing, and manipulating data from the Enterprise Data Warehouse and other databases. This will require basic programming to prepare data for reporting and analysis.
• Presenting analytical findings in a variety of formats (reports, PowerPoint, Tableau, graphs, figures, and tables), formulating recommendations, and effectively presenting results to non-analytic audiences.
• Responsible for completing thorough quality assurance procedures ensuring accuracy, reliability, and validity of work
• Support the development, modification, and validation of new and existing quality measures as needed
• Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in healthcare related informatics field, public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics
• 3 years of experience working with big data for healthcare
• 3 years of experience with a statistical package such as R or SAS for analysis and reporting of datasets

Skills Required
• Knowledge of statistical testing and multivariate modeling
• Strong programming skills in SAS, willingness to learn other programming languages as necessary
• Relational database experience (MS SQL Server/Oracle)
• Experience with clinical data (e.g., Epic) strongly preferred
• Experience with data analysis and reporting, and working knowledge of data visualization (Tableau/Power BI) software is preferred

Healthcare Data Analyst II, Partners Healthcare

General Summary/ Overview Statement: The Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Cardiology is seeking a highly-motivated individual to assist with data management of multiple clinical research studies. The research focus of this group is Atrial Fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias. We seek to understand what determines the risk of developing cardiac conditions and identify patterns and improve risk profiling using electronic health record data. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and eager to learn about cardiovascular disease. The Data Analyst will focus on statistical analysis and data management of large datasets. A high level of maturity is essential, as the Data Analyst is given access to personal and confidential medical information. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks are essential. Candidate must be self-motivated, independent in task completion, and comfortable accepting feedback and guidance from colleagues.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities will include the following: Providing clinical data management support to the clinical study project, clinical data management team and Principal Investigator. Applying analytic techniques for high dimensional data to identify patterns and improve risk profiling using electronic health record data. Developing decision-analytic models to inform the optimal effectiveness of management approaches. Managing large databases and performing early and final database activities, such as statistical and regression analysis. Assisting and providing input into study and project level data analysis plan and interacting closely with other collaborating Investigators on data quality. Proactively communicating with the Investigators to help ensure analytical goals are achieved. Actively participating in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, scholarly reports and present at scientific conferences.

Skills/ Abilities/ Competencies Required: Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to learn how to use new software is also important. Knowledge of RedCap and statistical programs strongly preferred.

Rollins-teer Day, 8/26

We are looking for second year students to lead volunteer groups. This year, Rollins-teer Day will take place on Monday, August 26th from 7:45am-12:00pm, with most service activities taking place from 9:00am-12:00pm. Please note that many sites will not get back until 12:30pm due to transportation.

Each site will have one or more designated site leaders serving as the main point(s) of contact for their group in communicating with the volunteer site. They are expected to arrive no later than 7:30am on Monday, August 26th to assist students as they arrive. Site leaders will also be required to attend a mandatory training session on Monday, August 19th from 12:00pm-1:00pm, where lunch will be provided.

You will be asked to specify your top five choices for Rollins-teer Day sites, and we will do our best to accommodate your preferences, though please keep in mind not all sites are in need of leaders at this time. Prior to the training, you will receive an e-mail with further instructions along with confirmation of your Rollins-teer site.

Volunteer with Fulton County Board Of Health Survey, 9/1

The Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH) is again soliciting student volunteers for their second annual Pride festival survey! Focusing on knowledge, attitudes and barriers to use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among priority populations like men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender persons who reside in Fulton County, this survey will collect data to help the county refine their PrEP services to individuals at greatest risk of HIV.

The first event that the county will be administering the survey at this year will be the Atlanta Black Pride Weekend on Sunday, September 1.  This will take place in Piedmont Park in Midtown.

CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.

Countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS) are progressing towards malaria elimination, and their malaria programs will need to rapidly detect and effectively treat infections, map areas where malaria transmission persists, and tailor and target intervention packages according to local contexts. CHAI is working to help malaria programs across the region achieve their ambitious goals by providing operational and technical support to strengthen surveillance systems, improve evidence-based planning, better manage programs, and coordinate activities regionally.

Overview of Role:

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong public health experience and analytical skills to serve as an epidemiologist and technical advisor to its teams across the GMS. This role offers a unique opportunity for a talented individual to apply epidemiological and analytical skills to guide the operations of a cross-country disease elimination program. The successful candidate will lead a small team of epidemiologists working directly with government counterparts and the CHAI staff who support them to assess, design, and scale-up disease surveillance systems; conduct robust data analysis; and monitor and evaluate the success of ongoing efforts to achieve malaria elimination. The individual will collaborate with a diverse team based across multiple countries (primarily but not exclusively in Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos), government programs, academics and public health agencies.

The successful candidate will possess strong communication, organizational, and management skills; work independently to drive implementation; have the potential to grow into a global health leader; and have deep personal commitment to producing results. CHAI places great value on relevant personal qualities including resourcefulness, tenacity, independence, patience, humility, and strong work ethic.

Responsibilities
Serve as an expert/technical advisor for epidemiological and other technical questions to CHAI’s regional team and lead all the malaria surveillance and analytics work for the Greater Mekong Subregion
Provide technical mentorship, supervision, training and ongoing management to a small team of epidemiologists based across the region
Proactively review evidence and conduct analyses to evaluate effectiveness of the current operations, and identify potential approaches or strategies to accelerate progress
Provide high-quality analytic support related to malaria epidemiology, intervention, surveillance, and other programmatic decisions to CHAI country teams, government staff, and other partners and translate findings to support evidence-based decisions; this includes:
Oversee the implementation of analytical projects related to malaria epidemiology, intervention and surveillance (data management, spatial and mapping analyses, data interpretation, etc.)
Lead the monitoring and evaluation of the performance of existing and new surveillance processes and platforms, and identify ways of improving them
Supporting the development and deployment of surveillance systems in country, liaising with Health Information Technical Advisor
Work directly with country teams and governmental staff to better integrate epidemiological, entomological, and programmatic data use and analysis into routine programmatic activities at all levels of the health system, and to translate analytical findings for non-technical audiences (i.e. political and programmatic stakeholders)
Review and ensure high quality of surveillance guidelines and SOPs, M&E plans, lessons learned documents and operational manuals
Oversee design, implementation, analysis and dissemination of operational research projects related to surveillance, intervention effectiveness, and entomology
Develop and maintain relationships with regional partners from academic institutions to identify research with potential application to programs
Organize, clean, and integrate datasets; conduct statistical analyses; and develop and interpret malaria risk maps and stratifications
Support rigorous evidence-based planning of intervention deployment, and design and implement monitoring and evaluation activities to measure impact (e.g. community health workers programs, bednet distribution campaigns, etc.)
Manage and develop resources and best practices to share lessons across teams, and synthesize and disseminate findings through high-quality presentations, reports, and publications
Represent CHAI at external technical meetings, acting as the face of our organization to academic/technical partners within the region, including via the dissemination of findings through high-quality presentations, reports, and publications
Cultivate and establish relationships with other CHAI teams, government organizations, and regional and in-country partners working on data analysis or surveillance to inform elimination goals
Participate to the formulation of grant proposals related to malaria surveillance and analytics in the GMS region when required

ORISE Fellow: Surveillance Epidemiologist

Position Description: The Domestic WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) Epidemiology Team is looking for an ORISE Fellow to join its surveillance program. The ORISE Fellow will be trained in the epidemiologic and informatics techniques needed to conduct national surveillance for cases of waterborne disease in the United States. The ORISE Fellow will learn epidemiologic and informatics techniques to collect, provision, and analyze national case surveillance data for waterborne pathogens, including how to describe epidemiologic trends and to prepare analytic results for publication on websites, fact sheets, and peer-reviewed manuscripts. The ORISE Fellow will learn how to communicate with state and federal partners on surveillance activities to provide technical assistance and write clear guidance materials.

Qualifications: A recent MPH graduate in the field of epidemiology, with strong data management skills, excellent communication and written skills, attention to detail, and a good team player. Some environmental health or informatics training/background desirable.

Organization Description: The Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch works to maximize the health, productivity, and well-being of people in the United States and around the globe by preventing domestic and global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related disease. The Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch (WDPB) is in the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at CDC.
