This position is responsible for organizing data collection processes, managing databases, and reporting on metrics for assigned research and evaluation initiatives at ACCESS. The Senior Data Specialist participates in planning, data analysis and program and performance monitoring and improvement activities.

  • Develop, populate and maintain databases containing patient data using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, SPSS/SAS or other software, as needed
  • Collaborate with colleagues to analyze data, interpret results, provide written summaries and present findings to nontechnical audiences
  • Develop and maintain documentation for data management procedures including workflows, codebooks, etc.
  • Create performance reports for use in grant reporting and management
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of data files by conduction data validation, data cleaning and de-duplication

Required Qualifications

2021-2022 Public Health Leadership Institue, Region IV Public Health Training Center

Description

The Region IV Public Health Training Center has partnered with the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development at the University of Georgia to offer the Region IV Public Health Leadership Institute (PHLI). The PHLI provides training for individuals from the eight states that comprise HHS Region IV (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee). There is no fee to participate.

The PHLI is an 8-month experience providing 40 contact hours of interaction. The Institute consists of a virtual orientation; a virtual retreat November 1-4, 2021; and 6 virtual sessions, lasting 2 hours each. In addition to these sessions, participants will be asked to complete approximately 2-3 hours of intersession work between the virtual sessions.

Program Learning Objectives

By the end of the Institute, participants will be able to:

  • Identify personal leadership strengths
  • Address a leadership challenge through a self-directed adaptive approach
  • Engage in peer consulting with Region IV colleagues
  • Apply leadership competencies in the context of public health

ORISE Fellow in the Surveillance and Data Science Branch in the Division of STD Prevention, CDC

Description

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Surveillance and Data Science Branch (SDSB), Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

DSTDP’s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications. The mission of SDSB is to capture STD morbidity data, assess STD burden and trends, and develop and conduct sentinel surveillance of STDs and STD adverse outcomes. These surveillance activities provide a foundation for the annual STD Surveillance Reports. Additionally, SDSB evaluates and provides recommendations for improving STD surveillance systems and provides guidance on the inclusion of STD data elements into information systems that can electronically receive, store, and transmit STD morbidity and case management data.

Research Project: Possible learning opportunities include assisting with:

  • Coordinating the tracking and management of issues that arise during data quality reviews
  • Developing innovative data visualization products for hard copy and digital publications, presentations, dashboards, and communication materials
  • Analyzing and managing data collected from multiple data sources using various methodologies
  • Developing and managing data analysis guides, data documentation, data management procedures, reports, and analysis
  • Developing SAS and R programs to conduct data analyses, data management, and data visualizations

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by May 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

These vacancies (2) are located in the Science Policy and Evaluation Branch (SPEB), Office of Science Policy, Planning, and Communications (OSPPC) within the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The incumbent has the principal responsibility for staying abreast of analyzing, and reporting on several areas of mental health research and service activities.

 

Responsibilities

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation) at the time the degree was obtained.

Based on GS Level

GS-12: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, you must demonstrate one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: evaluating issues associated with health-related research programs (i.e. mental health research); analyzing health-science policies; coordinating and preparing materials with health-related research content for scientific programs; maintaining liaisons or collaborations with stakeholders; interpreting scientific information for all audiences.

GS-13: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, you must demonstrate one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: advising senior leadership on issues concerning health-science policies; contributing to the development of biomedical research policy; developing planning and evaluation processes; evaluating scientific programs and recommending changes; developing research policy communication documents (i.e., talking points, briefing materials, etc.).

Applied Epidemiology Fellowship in Data Analysis, CDC

Description 

The CDC’s Malaria Branch is pleased to list an ORISE fellowship position which will focus in training and analysis of large malaria datasets for epidemiological estimates. Field surveys which have collected large amounts of data on individual, community-level, and ecological variables are of great value for determining the incidence and prevalence of malaria in a population. The ORISE position will involve the analysis of these large datasets which have been combined with data from laboratory assays. The fellow will focus on the multivariate and spatial components of these analyses, and will work to prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.    

 

Qualifications

Graduation in the previous five years with a degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or equivalent. Candidates with experience in analysis of large datasets, spatial analysis, and scientific writing will be most competitive.

 

Appointment Period

  • 3/31/21 to 3/30/22 (dates unable to be modified)

 

Pay range

  • MPH: $56,292/annum
  • PhD/DrPH: $68,112/annum
  • Degree completion plus additional work experience has potential for salary negotiation.

Epidemiologist, Heluna Health

Plans, designs, implements, evaluates, and manages health-related surveillance systems, original epidemiologic studies and field investigations; and provides consultation to departmental staff and external health partners on epidemiologic research methodology and design.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

The duties of the Epidemiologist include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates COVID-19 epidemiological studies and investigations of disease outbreaks; including the development of study design and methodology, analysis of case and control data, and preparation of reports on the study or investigation findings;
  • Conducts investigations of environmental health threats, including collecting and analyzing health and environmental data; prepares interpretation of findings and disseminates recommended prevention and control measures for COVID-19;

Public Health Epidemiologist, Durham County

The purpose of this job is to conduct population health surveillance in Durham County, perform statistical analyses related to complex analytical investigations, coordinate data collection at the county level, disseminate findings through presentations and reports, and support epidemiological studies of outbreak investigations.

This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. 

  • Maintains, analyzes, and updates surveillance data related to the population health in Durham County.
  • Creates data briefs, reports, and presentations to disseminate data and information on emerging population health trends in Durham County.
  • Develops data collection methodology; conducts data collection to include a random sample of households in Durham County and qualitative data collected through listening sessions and contribute to writing for the community health assessment every three years.
  • Provides technical assistance to other County Departments by completing data requests and assist with survey development to improve utilization of data, evidence-based practices, and increase the use of data driven decisions within the organization.
  • Engage in community meetings to identify needs; what issues are most important to community members and to communicate data related news to community members and organizations.

Laboratory and Epidemiology Coordinator, Department of Forensic Sciences

Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS). The mission of the DFS is to provide high-quality, timely, accurate, and reliable forensic science services using best practices and best available technology, focusing on unbiased science and transparency, to enhance public safety and health.

The overall goal of this position is to timely and appropriately coordinate the submission of clinical samples to the DC Public Health Laboratory (DC PHL) for laboratory testing, improve data collection quality, and facilitate ongoing communication and data sharing of laboratory testing results with DC Department of Health (DOH) to support surveillance and outbreak investigation activities. The coordinator will work closely with the DFS PHL Director and Laboratory Unit Managers to coordinate efforts between the DOH Infectious Disease Epidemiologists and with outside stakeholders pertaining to disease surveillance, sample submission, and laboratory testing.  The incumbent will ensure the efficient and effective conduct of public health surveillance to support the wellbeing of District residents, visitors, and stakeholders.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Laboratory & Epidemiology Coordinator serves as the primary point of communication for DC health care facility (HCF) laboratories, commercial laboratories, or other facilities submitting clinical samples to the PHL by responding to all inquiries. Develops communication plans to conduct ongoing outreach and education to submitting laboratories.  Provides outreach services to DC HCF laboratories, clinics, and offices. Troubleshoots and optimizes methods for patient sample submission by working with outside stakeholders, including sentinel clinical laboratories, hospitals, and local health clinics to communicate and educate staff about available testing methods and appropriate sample collection and handling requirements requested by the Public Health Laboratory. Oversees sample submission protocol development.

The incumbent ensures the timely submission of critical outbreak samples and draft a sample submission report to be sent to the Epidemiologist who is leading the outbreak investigation. Ensures routine sample submission targets are met based on established standard (e.g. number of submitted samples, timeliness of sample submission) by tracking and reporting submission performance metrics. Reports laboratory data to DOH for surveillance and performance metrics required by federal grants (e.g. for reports, during meetings).  Communicates key surveillance findings to relevant stakeholders (including detection of clusters using BioNumerics). Assists with reporting to meet grant deliverables and performance metrics. Maintains a current understanding of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines and regulations as they pertain to clinical testing to direct quality assurance in the laboratory in collaboration with the designated Specialist.

 

Qualifications and Education

A Bachelor’s or higher-level degree in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position; in addition to one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-11 grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position including, but are not limited to, coordinating the timely and appropriate submission of clinical samples to the DC Public Health Laboratory (DC PHL) for laboratory testing, improving data collection quality, and facilitating the ongoing communication and data sharing of laboratory testing results with DC Department of Health (DOH) to support surveillance and outbreak investigation activities.

A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology, a laboratory science or forensic science and a higher degree is highly preferred and five (5) years or more of specialized experience, two years of which were gained from clinical, public health, or environmental laboratory setting and experience with customer service, marketing, negotiations and skills using other statistical analysis software highly desirable.
