SUMMARY:
Provide health research and writing of associated scientific products to support scientific activities in the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), Associate Director of Science (ADS) office
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct literature reviews related to particular scientific topics.
  • Develop analytical plans to be approved by the ADS staff or project lead.
  • Complete a concept proposal and once approved will present it before the OSH Science Committee.
  • Conduct the data analysis, present and discuss findings, and assist with drafting a manuscript or report.
  • Enter scientific documents in eClearance for review as directed by the OSH project lead.
  • Assist with reviewing paperwork and related documentation for OSH Office of Management and Budget (OMB)/Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) applications.
  • Make recommendations as to changes that are necessitated and will work with the associated branch or program as directed by the OSH project lead to ensure necessary edits and updates are made.
  • Assist in maintaining a share file repository of completed OSH (PRA)/(OMB) packages.
  • Work with the ADS office on developing and compiling information to serve as technical assistance for reviewing Data Management Plans on relevant OSH funded projects.
  • Develop internal technical assistance documents for programs to use to review Data Management Plans that are submitted by awardees.
  • Work with the ADS office to develop manuscripts and/or scientific abstracts that utilize public data shared by the Department of Defense (DOD) as part of a collaboration with OSH.
  • Participate in conference calls with DOD researchers in conjunction with and as directed by OSH ADS staff to review data analysis, discuss the progress of manuscripts and abstracts.
  • Review and assess data collected from two sources that were sponsored by or used by OSH.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing and seeing up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; occasional walking or standing, occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs. Job Requirements: **
*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

  • Master’s degree or higher and at least 2 years’ experience in public health or a related field and at least two years of experience in public health or a related field.
  • Experience serving as a co-author on at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or government report (e.g., MMWR).
  • Mid-level skills using standard statistical software, such as SAS, Stata, and SUDAAN.
  • Experience analyzing publicly available complex data surveys such as NHIS, NYTS, NSDUH.
  • Experience drafting manuscripts or scientific reports for publication in MMWR or peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with working with a scientific team to develop manuscripts and/or scientific abstracts.
  • Experience with OMB/PRA preferred.

Description

The mission of CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) is to promote optimal reproductive and infant health and quality of life by influencing public policy, health care practice, community practices, and individual behaviors through scientific and programmatic expertise, leadership, and support. The mission of DRH’s Maternal Mortality Prevention Team (MMPT) is to lead national approaches to the systematic collection, analysis, and use of data to end maternal health disparities, eliminate preventable maternal mortality, and improve the health of all women. MMPT leads two major surveillance approaches to understanding and preventing pregnancy-related deaths through state and local Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) and the Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS). MMPT supports MMRCs across the country to identify, abstract, and review pregnancy-related deaths and identify prevention opportunities, through the Enhancing Reviews and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM) program.

This fellowship provides opportunities to conduct data analyses that improve understanding of characteristics of, and prevention opportunities for, addressing pregnancy-related deaths; support ongoing development and modernization of the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) used by MMRCs for data collection, review, and analysis; and build state epidemiologic capacity for using maternal mortality review data for prevention.

Examples of learning opportunities

·         Train in quantitative and qualitative analyses of maternal mortality data to improve understanding of characteristics of and prevention opportunities for addressing pregnancy-related deaths

·         Draft and revise manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and government reports with feedback from staff scientists

·         Present results of analyses of maternal mortality data to internal and external audiences, including scientific conferences

·         Support ongoing surveillance database development and modernization

·         Develop epidemiology and data analysis-related resources for MMRC data analysts including data analysis guides and standardized SAS programs for data cleaning and analysis

·         Assist with providing epidemiology and data analysis-related technical assistance to MMRCs on a variety of topics including identification of pregnancy-associated deaths and analysis of MMRIA data

·         Assist with coordination of monthly MMRC data analyst office hours, as well as workgroups of MMRC data analysts on specific topics of interest (e.g., pregnancy-associated death identification, data visualization)

Qualifications and Necessary Skills

·         Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, or closely related disciplines is required. Candidates who are currently pursuing a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and are interested in completing a part-time fellowship will be considered.

·         Strong proficiency in using SAS for data management and analyses

·         Excellent analytic skills including experience in data management, data cleaning, and conducting epidemiologic analyses for large datasets

·         Experience with or interest in analyses that address health equity and social determinants of health

·         Strong background in epidemiology methods

·         Highly detail oriented, works well within a diverse team, demonstrates a high degree of initiative and flexibility adapt to shifting priorities, able to communicate effectively in a positive and professional manner, and able to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines. 

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing, writing, and editing complex documents such as detailed reports and peer-reviewed articles.

Length of Appointment:  The current appointment runs through May 31st 2022, with the possibility of extension for an additional 12-months beginning June 1, 2022

This fellowship is administered through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) program. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.  A monthly stipend is provided and a health insurance stipend is also available.

Environmental Consultant, Florida Department of Health

This position is responsible for providing advanced technical and consultative services for community planning and assessment activities, environmental epidemiology programs, county health departments, and other units as assigned by the supervisor. This position is primarily responsible for supporting the Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Program, management and analysis of health and environmental outcome data, and consultation on associations between health and environmental exposures. The position is also involved in planning and implementing investigations pertaining to health outcomes associated with exposure to environmental contaminant or hazards. In this position, the incumbent will:

Identify, assemble, and manage data sets related to health outcomes associated with environmental exposures, health outcomes, and social determinants of health. Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping, analysis, and visualization of public health data. Work with the Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) project staff to analyze the data to produce rates, indicators, and other analysis needed for grant deliverables.

Assist county health departments and other agencies or entities, as assigned by the supervisor, in the conceptualization, development, and interpretation of health data and studies designed to determine if the health of the public is adversely affected by exposure to environmental contaminants or hazards. Provide technical and consultative services in developing epidemiological and GIS capacity for local partners and other public health stakeholders.

Coordinate outreach and partnership building with other agencies, County Health Departments, universities and other potential partners both in Florida and nationally. Ensure ongoing communication and follow up on county health department projects to track the use of data and services provided by the EPHT program. Periodically evaluate the protocol for providing technical and consultative services (epidemiologic and GIS methods) to county health departments and other agencies or entities and make recommendations for improvement to supervisor as necessary.

Serve on and lead national and state workgroups or committees related to environmental epidemiology as needed, including participating on conference calls and boards.

Review annual EPHT data updates and the implementation of new public health measures. Work with environmental epidemiology staff and subject matter experts to confirm unexpected data trends. Coordinate with state and national partners to develop messaging and resources for EPHT data measures.

Epidemiologist II: Cardiac Epi, GA Department of Health

Job Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Georgia Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry (GCASR) senior epidemiologist, the Cardiac Epidemiologist 2 will be responsible for providing epidemiologic support; developing and conducting epidemiological investigations, surveillance and interventions as well as implementing and evaluating EMS performance measures related to cardiac conditions using EMS data and the designated Emergency Cardiac Care Center hospitals data. This position will monitor data using the statewide Georgia Cardiac Registry (GCaR) and Georgia Emergency Medical Services Information System (GEMSIS). Additionally, this position will analyze and interpret data related to Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) and ST Elevated Myocadial Infarction (STEMI) cases, respond to inquiries about OHCA and STEMI data.

The Cardiac Epidemiologist 2 will be responsible for:
 

  • Evaluate and summarize cardiac epidemiological, operational and programmatic data from designated Emergency Cardiac Care Centers (ECCCs) and EMS responses.
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative statistical data.
  • Coordinate with internal team members and external partners to create epidemiological programmatic reports.
  • Summarize and present cadiac epidemiological data utilizing tables, graphics, and other reports as needed.

ORISE Position, Enteric Disease Laboratory Branch at the CDC

Synopsis
Working on the bioinformatics of cgMLST and nanopore in the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch at CDC.

Project description
The mission of EDLB is to lead the preparedness and response to foodborne and diarrheal diseases in the United States and abroad by facilitating laboratory detection, identification, and characterization of foodborne bacterial pathogens. The selected participant will be trained in a team of expert bioinformaticians to help create and run workflows. These workflows include, but are not limited to, Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) assembly and core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). In this role, the fellow will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to develop, maintain, and support bioinformatics applications and systems used in CDC’s national foodborne illness surveillance program.
The fellow will apply their training to design and develop genome analysis tools. Successful workflows will be used in EDLB and the broader CDC scope but may also be deployed to public health labs for characterizing bacterial pathogens.

Learning objectives
• Developing and implementing bioinformatics tools for analysis of bacterial whole genome sequences
• Performing quality control, assembly, annotation, and analysis of genetic subtyping data
• Preparing data for submission to public repositories including NCBI
• Developing and documenting standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analysis pipelines and workflows

Postdoctoral Surgical Research Scholar, Westchester Medical Center

This post-doctoral position requires an individual ready to actively participate in our dedicated surgical outcomes research program. The incumbent will make major contributions and improve our standing as a leading research institution addressing surgical outcomes. Successful candidates will design, implement, complete, analyze, and prepare manuscripts on studies related to surgical outcomes. The Surgical Research Scholar is expected to: possess attention to detail; be able to communicate effectively at all levels; exhibit initiative; work well with others and independently; and comply with all Westchester Medical Center (WMC) and New York Medical College (NYMC) procedures regarding clinical research.

Responsibilities

·         Engage in all aspects of research projects: draft Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols; collect data; validate data; analyze data; prepare, submit and present conference abstracts; and draft and submit journal manuscripts/book chapters.

·         Identify research gaps in surgical outcome literatures and propose research projects.

·         Partner with and offer guidance and consultation to students, residents, fellows and professionals in the Department of Surgery.

·         Participate and present in meetings with the Chair, investigators, Department of Surgery Clinical Research Unit (DSCRU) staff and clinical staff.

·         Assist in obtaining research funding.

Qualifications

(A) Education requirement:

PhD, DrPH, ScD or DPhil in epidemiology, statistics, health services research and clinical/translational research or related disciplines.

(B) Licenses or certifications:

(C) Skills/requirements:

·         Expertise is needed in these areas: research design & methods, statistics, preparing funding requests and publishing journal articles.

·         Knowledge is required in regression modeling (including logistic, linear, Poisson/negative binomial, and Cox models); techniques for repeated measures, analysis of variance, hierarchical/mixed models, time series analysis, receiver operating curve analysis and meta-analysis.

·         Proficiency is required in statistical software packages as well as Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

·         It would be helpful to have knowledge of real world healthcare, electronic medical records, and/or biomedical informatics.

(D) Prior experience:

Two to three years of epidemiologic, public health, health services or clinical research experience. Qualified individuals must work well independently. The individual must have excellent people skills. You should be able to implement projects and adjust them to meet current and future criteria as necessary. Must be able to adapt to changes quickly.
