Harvard Educational Program on Cancer Prevention and Control

The Harvard Educational Program in Cancer Prevention and Control is an NCI-funded T32 program to train the next generation of scientists in transdisciplinary approaches to cancer prevention and control. The program includes both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training options. 

Applications for post-doctoral candidates are due on November 1. Pre-doctoral candidates apply to our Population Health Sciences PhD Program and are selected from among those admitted to the PhD program—applications due December 1. Survey Manager, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

The Research and Evaluation Unit in the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and Sexually Transmitted Infections) has an opening for a Survey  Manager  (Civil Service Title: City Research Scientist II).

Under the direction of the Senior Analyst, and in collaboration with other Unit, Program and Bureau staff, the Survey Manager will contribute to process and outcome evaluation and scientific research activities for a dynamic portfolio of high priority projects aimed to End the Epidemic of HIV/AIDS in New York City. 

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

• Coordinate the development and implementation of the scientific research surveys in the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (e.g., Sexual Health Survey (SHS).

• Coordinate online-based operations for select high-impact HIV/AIDS prevention scientific research and evaluation projects including venue engagement, staffing, protocol adherence, and ensuring participant confidentiality and epidemiological data security.

• Identify existing validated scientific research survey questions to meet NYC DOHMH program needs and aid in the development of new scientific research survey questions.

• Conduct formative scientific research with community groups applying principles of community-based participatory scientific research.

• Maintain study files including updates and tracking changes to scientific research questionnaires.

• Maintain an inventory and matrix of scientific research survey questions.

• Organize and maintain vendor reports an memos related to epidemiological data collection.

• Ensure and document the translation of scientific research study materials into all study languages with quality controls.

• Develop human subjects scientific research protocols for Institutional Review Board applications, and track progress of submissions.

• Develop training materials for epidemiological data collectors and attend trainings in-person as needed.

• Lead testing of programmed scientific research questionnaires and review questionnaires for accuracy and ensure the most current versions are being used.

• Review weekly epidemiological data reports and track study progress.

• Monitor project deliverables to ensure they are completed on schedule.

• Assess any issues and suggest solutions to team leads.

• Participate in core unit activities, including epidemiological data monitoring, cleaning, managing, analyzing and displaying process and outcomes data using analytic software packages (SAS).

• Contribute to reports, presentations, peer reviewed journals and scientific research papers for public dissemination.

• Support other Bureau projects as needed, including providing consultation for other scientific research surveys.

• Participate in DOHMH efforts to promote health equity and racial justice.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1.  For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in “2” above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in “1” and “2” above.

Research Coordinator, Albert Einstein College of Medicine

The Research Coordinator will work full-time on an NIH-funded study to examine the use of the TB drug bedaquiline in patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). Specifically, the study will recruit patients in South Africa with MDR TB or XDR TB who are returning to care after interrupting treatment, to determine if they have developed additional resistance to bedaquiline and clofazimine due to treatment interruption. This project is being conducted at multiple clinical sites across South Africa. The study will enroll 300 participants over a 3 year period. Data will
be collected from medical records and research visits. Research visits will include participant interviews, blood and sputum collection, and medical record abstraction.


Responsibilities:
• Provide principal administrative and research support to the Principal Investigator (PI) in the administration and implementation of an NIH funded project being conducted at multiple sites in South Africa.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of the project with US- and South Africa-based investigators, data managers, study coordinator and clinical staff.
• Work with Principal Investigator (PI) to develop and update study protocols, including the data collection tools/case report forms (CRFs).
• Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for activities at each study site.
• Develop and monitor implementation of project work plans.
• Track screening, enrollment and follow-up data collection of study participants; prepare regular reports for the PI about participant recruitment and study-visit completion.
• Train and supervise South African study coordinator, research nurses and research assistants to ensure compliance to all aspects of the project protocols and national and international regulations.
• Prepare agendas for and coordinate project meetings and phone calls. Write and distribute minutes from all meetings.
• Partner with Einstein REDCap team to develop and maintain study databases and securely store study data.
• Oversee data collection by South African research staff and troubleshoot challenges that emerge.
• Conduct quarterly site monitoring at the international study site(s). When international travel is not possible, quality control of CRFs will be conducted from the U.S. through review of scanned and emailed documents.
• Assist in drafting data reports, preparing conference abstracts, and presentations related to the project.
• Prepare and submit ethics applications, including amendments and annual renewals to the Einstein Institutional Review Board (IRB); oversee ethics applications at all relevant site IRBs.
• Assist the PI in the management of the study budget, tracking of subcontract invoices from collaborating institutions.
• Other duties as assigned.


Experience and Educational Background:
• Bachelor’s Degree in public health, clinical epidemiology or related field and 3-5 years of experience required. Master’s Degree preferred.
• At least two years of experience collecting data for human subjects research (e.g. conducting interviews, collecting biologic specimens, extracting medical records).
• Experience with international research projects is preferred.


Skills and Competencies
• As part of a team, must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities, work independently with minimal supervision, and adhere to study protocol.
• Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with database and statistical software (e.g., REDCap and SAS or Stata).

Biostatistics and Data Science ORISE Fellowship, Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases

DFWED is dedicated to development and advancement of biomedical research to improve public health through the prevention and control of disease, disability, and death caused by foodborne, waterborne, and environmentally transmitted infections. SIMSO consists of a motivated, highly skilled, and dynamic group of statisticians, surveillance epidemiologists, and IT professionals who work with epidemiologists and laboratory scientists in DFWED’s five branches to apply existing and novel analytical methodology to a variety of complex research projects.

The fellow will be training with experts in the fields of epidemiology, laboratory science, bioinformatics, and statistics to apply or develop statistical methods for the analysis of genetic/WGS data and other forms of “big data” resulting from waste water surveillance as well as CDC’s Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) initiative.  The fellow will participate in developing, evaluating, and validating statistical and machine learning algorithms for outbreak/anomaly detection of multiple foodborne, waterborne, and mycotic pathogens.  Reports summarizing findings and tools for implementing finalized algorithms will be produced. The fellow will also train in interpretation of results and will practice developing and providing the Division and external partners with training on tools developed as well as statistical software.

Bioinformatician I/II – Informatics Systems & Application Support Programer, CDC

The mission of the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch (EDLB) is to lead the preparedness and response to foodborne and diarrheal diseases in the United States and abroad by facilitating laboratory detection, identification, and characterization of foodborne bacterial pathogens.

Role:

Working at the CDC both as an onsite and remote contract employee, the role entails supporting the mission of the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch by supporting the applications and systems used to analyze whole genome sequence data (WGS) generated from foodborne bacteria. In this role, the candidate will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to develop, maintain and support software applications and systems used in CDC’s national foodborne illness surveillance program called PulseNet. The candidate will apply their experience in software programming and bioinformatics to design and develop genome analysis tools that will be deployed to public health labs for characterizing bacterial pathogens. Additionally, the candidate will leverage their experience in systems infrastructure and AWS to containerize existing applications for deployment to a cloud-based infrastructure. This role requires the candidate to wear many hats in support of the team’s overall mission so multi-tasking and/or flexibility across multiple areas.

Education:

— Bachelor’s degree in STEM or related field a must (i.e. Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Biology, or Bioinformatics)

Associate Scientist I, American Cancer Society

The Associate Scientist assists principal scientists in the Population Science program with research on the epidemiologic and behavioral aspects of the cancer continuum: prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship.  They contribute to a team of research analysts who share responsibilities for programming, statistical modeling, program review, analysis documentation, development of new study resources, and support of external collaborations. In addition, the analyst will help advance the groups collective expertise in statistical programming and epidemiologic methods through independent study, internal presentations, and written memos. The position includes opportunities for learning skills relevant to epidemiology and behavioral science including co-lead/authorship of peer-reviewed publications.

  • Work with ACS principal scientists to design and conduct internal research studies using American Cancer Society datasets (primarily the Cancer Prevention Study II and 3)
  • Provide statistical programming support (information, datasets, and statistical analysis) for collaborative studies with outside researchers.
  • Generate presentations and reports for internal and external use.
  • Assist in the preparation of papers for publication in the fields of epidemiology, behavioral science, and public health, including conducting scientific literature reviews.

Position Requirements

Master’s degree in Epidemiology or a related field (Public Health, Bioinformatics, Behavioral Health etc.) and at least one-year of programming experience in analytic work, preferably in a scientific, epidemiologic, or behavioral research environment.

  • Ability to conduct statistical analyses and interpret results using SAS and R. Ability to learn additional software and programming languages as needed (ex. SPSS, Python, Mplus).
  • Knowledge of survey-based research methods including longitudinal and survival analysis, and/or biospecimen-related analysis (genomics, metabolomics)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to produce high quality work independently.
  • Highly motivated with strong attention to detail and organization skills.
