ORISE Position, Enteric Disease Laboratory Branch at the CDC

Synopsis
Working on the bioinformatics of cgMLST and nanopore in the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch at CDC.

Project description
The mission of EDLB is to lead the preparedness and response to foodborne and diarrheal diseases in the United States and abroad by facilitating laboratory detection, identification, and characterization of foodborne bacterial pathogens. The selected participant will be trained in a team of expert bioinformaticians to help create and run workflows. These workflows include, but are not limited to, Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) assembly and core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). In this role, the fellow will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to develop, maintain, and support bioinformatics applications and systems used in CDC’s national foodborne illness surveillance program.
The fellow will apply their training to design and develop genome analysis tools. Successful workflows will be used in EDLB and the broader CDC scope but may also be deployed to public health labs for characterizing bacterial pathogens.

Learning objectives
• Developing and implementing bioinformatics tools for analysis of bacterial whole genome sequences
• Performing quality control, assembly, annotation, and analysis of genetic subtyping data
• Preparing data for submission to public repositories including NCBI
• Developing and documenting standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analysis pipelines and workflows

Preferred skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Experience scripting in at least one language (Python, perl, R, or shell preferred)
• Comfortable working in a highly interdisciplinary environment

Postdoctoral Surgical Research Scholar, Westchester Medical Center

This post-doctoral position requires an individual ready to actively participate in our dedicated surgical outcomes research program. The incumbent will make major contributions and improve our standing as a leading research institution addressing surgical outcomes. Successful candidates will design, implement, complete, analyze, and prepare manuscripts on studies related to surgical outcomes. The Surgical Research Scholar is expected to: possess attention to detail; be able to communicate effectively at all levels; exhibit initiative; work well with others and independently; and comply with all Westchester Medical Center (WMC) and New York Medical College (NYMC) procedures regarding clinical research.

Responsibilities

·         Engage in all aspects of research projects: draft Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols; collect data; validate data; analyze data; prepare, submit and present conference abstracts; and draft and submit journal manuscripts/book chapters.

·         Identify research gaps in surgical outcome literatures and propose research projects.

·         Partner with and offer guidance and consultation to students, residents, fellows and professionals in the Department of Surgery.

·         Participate and present in meetings with the Chair, investigators, Department of Surgery Clinical Research Unit (DSCRU) staff and clinical staff.

·         Assist in obtaining research funding.

Qualifications

(A) Education requirement:

PhD, DrPH, ScD or DPhil in epidemiology, statistics, health services research and clinical/translational research or related disciplines.

(B) Licenses or certifications:

N/A.

(C) Skills/requirements:

·         Expertise is needed in these areas: research design & methods, statistics, preparing funding requests and publishing journal articles.

·         Knowledge is required in regression modeling (including logistic, linear, Poisson/negative binomial, and Cox models); techniques for repeated measures, analysis of variance, hierarchical/mixed models, time series analysis, receiver operating curve analysis and meta-analysis.

·         Proficiency is required in statistical software packages as well as Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

·         It would be helpful to have knowledge of real world healthcare, electronic medical records, and/or biomedical informatics.

(D) Prior experience:

Two to three years of epidemiologic, public health, health services or clinical research experience. Qualified individuals must work well independently. The individual must have excellent people skills. You should be able to implement projects and adjust them to meet current and future criteria as necessary. Must be able to adapt to changes quickly.

Reproductive Health Epidemiology Fellowship, CDC

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Reproductive Health (DRH), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

The mission of CDC’s DRH is to promote optimal reproductive and infant health and quality of life by influencing public policy, health care practice, community practices, and individual behaviors through scientific and programmatic expertise, leadership, and support. DRH’s Fertility Epidemiology Studies (FES) Team conducts research related to the epidemiology of fertility, including the safety and effectiveness of contraceptive methods.

Research Project: During 2021-2023, CDC will be updating the US contraception guidelines. The update process will include activities to determine the scope of the update, conduct systematic reviews of the evidence to help determine updated recommendations, convene a meeting to receive external input on the evidence and updated recommendations, develop and publish updated editions of US MEC and US SPR, update and develop new provider tools, and disseminate and implement the guidelines.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected Fellow will train with the FES Team in the following activities:

  • determining the scope of the US MEC/SPR update, including coordinating review of public comments and participating in a scoping meeting
  • conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses in preparation for the US MEC/SPR update meeting
  • planning for the US MEC/SPR update meeting and presenting evidence from systematic reviews during the meeting
  • contributing to the development of the updated US MEC/SPR publications, including finalizing recommendations and evidence summaries
  • participating in dissemination and implementation activities, including updating and developing new provider tools, collaborating with partners, and planning a partner webinar
  • managing the web-based Continuous Identification of Research Evidence (CIRE) system
  • providing technical assistance to WHO on the global contraception guidelines

Learning Objectives: This is an excellent opportunity for a Fellow who wants to apply epidemiological skills to real life programmatic questions; gain thorough knowledge of the scientific evidence regarding contraceptive safety and effectiveness; acquire experience in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses; prepare manuscripts for publication; and network with the major family planning experts in the US and around the world. Depending on the Fellow’s interests, there will be opportunities for peer-review publications, presentations at the CDC and at national scientific meetings, data analyses on other reproductive health topics leading to publication, contribute to the FES Team’s abortion surveillance activities, collaboration on other projects within DRH, and access to CDC training opportunities.

Epidemiologist, Tennessee Department of Health

The Epidemiologist in this position will be assisting with the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting waterborne and zoonotic disease surveillance. Please see below for details regarding the position and skills needed to be considered. This position is contract and full time. The project is 6 months in length. Must be able to work on site (Nashville) 2 days per week. Will work on site 2 days per week.

The epidemiologist will be responsible for performing data entry, cleaning, analysis, and visualization, while also conducting data quality assurance. The candidate will also assist as needed with outbreak response and resource development.

Epidemiologist, Division of Reproductive Health of the CDC Foundation

The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for an Epidemiologist position to support activities addressing COVID-19 and maternal child-health (MCH) surveillance projects. The Epidemiologist will work closely with the Emergency Preparedness and Response Team, Field Support Branch, Division of Reproductive Health, CDC, to provide technical assistance to MCH assignees in state health departments. This technical support includes analyzing safety data related to COVID-19 vaccination in pregnant people and infants, analyzing data from MCH surveillance systems collecting information on SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy (e.g. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) COVID-19 supplements) and electronic health record data assets.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Develop analytical plans and proposals

  • Highly detail oriented, works well within a diverse team, demonstrates a high degree of initiative and flexibility adapt to shifting priorities, able to communicate effectively in a positive and professional manner, able to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing, writing, and editing complex documents such as data dictionaries, codebooks, detailed reports, briefing documents for stakeholders/partners and peer-reviewed articles. 
  • Sound judgment and maturity, exemplified by consistent professionalism in dealing with individuals at all levels both internally and externally.
