For my Swiss Spaghetti podcast, two ways have emerged in which I can approach the situation. The first being a radio talk similar to that of Sawbones where I would be discussing the phenomenon and invite a guest (i.e. Swiss farmer) onto the show to share his experiences. This would enable me to reach a wider audience due to the European roots of this hoax. In order to make it seem more believable, I might even use a popular French broadcasting network that I used to listen to in high school called TV5 Monde. Since it is a Swiss hoax, I could pull in my own French-speaking abilities to make it more entertaining- possibly even using my own voice as the guest speaker to play on the mocking tone. The second option is a little more basic, wherein I use the hoax to create a bedtime story. This would further limit my audience to a younger generation; however, it could still be just as popular. The difficulty I see in portraying it this way is perhaps interweaving my own analysis into the fabrication of the hoax. While this might pose as a challenge, if I were able to come up with a solution, then it would be equally if not more entertaining than the first option mentioned above.
One would be a humorously sarcastic approach where I make serious remarks but use vocal inflection to infer its non sincerity. This would be similar to the podcast making fun of those who fell for the War of Worlds hoax. Similarly, this would be targeting those who seriously believed in the hoax and the sarcastic tone will be used to lighten up the hoax.
Another method would be to attack the hoax more analytically. This would open up possibilities to play the music from The Division Bell in which the hoax is supposedly masked behind. This would target those who want to learn more about the hoax and how people believe it- not as much those who want to believe it.
1. I could create a podcast that is a historical reflection of the hoax itself. This could include the author, her article and its creation process, her accomplishments, the discovery of the hoax, and then the implications.
2. The second style could be focused more on the hoax itself. I could possibly read it, and have commentary on the hoax and its elements, and then add some reflection in towards the end rather than adding reflections on each step of the creation and revelation of the hoax.
As I briefly mentioned in the last post, my approach for the podcast will be to actually sell Gen Pets through a more a marketing/ advertising manner. My podcast will be like a commercial. To make the podcast completely believable, not only will I be speaking about Gen Pets to inform the listeners as if I am an honest spokes person selling this new product, but will also have scientists add more insight into the new toy and how it was produced. Following that, there will also be a comment from a pleased 8 year old customer that genuinely enjoyed the pleasures of having a Gen Pet. Sound effects will be included to make it appear as though the girl speaking to us directly with her Gen Pet there with her. As for skeptics, I will have testimonies from them, months after having received a free Gen Pet to experience their company.
As I mentioned before in my original post, I plan to approach my hoax from a comedic standpoint. To do this, I want to expose contradictions within my hoax and then show the absurdity that people believed. That way, I can use humor to uncover the stupidity of the hoax and its implications.
I am considering my method for how I can do this most effectively. My first idea is to have a central host for the podcast that interviews “experts” on my subject and to use their information to make conclusions. That way, I can use rhetorical analysis tools to pick apart my hoax based on the extra information that my interviewees would give me.
The second option is to use an approach similar to the Sawbones podcast. I would have an analytical character who would do most of the explaining of the hoax and a commentator character who would add humor. The commentator would make funny comments and use questions to expose absurdities in the hoax. Either way, I have a good idea of what I want to do.
I would like to portray most of my podcast in a very talk show like manner. I will be including one or two guests to host a discussion with on my hoax, hopefully creating an engaging and thought-provoking atmosphere. I would like to stray away from presenting the audience with multiple facts, instead conversing with other people on different aspects of the story that some may find interesting. When I picture my podcast in my head, it appears quite similar to ‘The Talking Dead’, a talk show that takes place after every ‘Walking Dead’ episode. This show has many satirical moments, yet also goes quite in depth with different aspects of the recent episode, analyzing it a step further than most viewers initially would. While I do not want this to be my primary brand, I would also like to represent my podcast with a few moments that are similar to that of a news broadcast. I am planning on having separately recorded interviews with people who were effected by Y2K, playing them periodically throughout the podcast. After these interviews are presented, I plan on commenting on them much like a news anchor may comment on a story given by another reporter. With the mix of these two different styles, I hope to create a laid-back yet informational podcast.
