“Travelers Among Mountain and Streams”
This painting is called Travelers Among Mountain and Streams. During the Song Dynasty, Fan Kuan was a Chinese landscape painter. Originally, he followed Li Cheng, but he eventually changed to a better teacher: the Nature. I chose Fan Kuan, because he gave the art a big impression. After Fan Kuan, every artist used his painting as the model for art. Because he was a solitary person, very few people knew what his life was like. He liked to live in the mountains.
I think Fan Kuan’s painting is very pretty, because Travelers Among Mountain and Streams gave me a really deep impression. The painting depicts that humans are really small compared to nature. In addition to the size being very different, human life compared to nature is very short. The most distinct characteristic of this painting is that it is detailed to look at. The mountain has a lot of trees and the rocks are large and magnificent. The painting have mountain, water, trees, a temple, and common folks. It is very refreshing. I think that Fan Kuan must have used a lot of heart to draw this painting. He used calligraphy such that you can see small pen marks that looks like rain drops. Right now, Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among Mountain and Streams is located in Taipei’s museum.
Luxuriant Forest Among Distant Peaks
This painting is called “Luxuriant Forest Among Distant Peaks”. The artist painted it using black ink. He added water to the black ink so the black ink looked grey. He painted on silk. This painting has mountains and trees. In front of the mountains there are bridges, houses, and other manmade buildings. When the artist painted the mountains and trees that were far away, he used ink with water added to it. The far mountains appear softer than the closer mountains.
The artist of this painting is very famous. His name is Li Cheng. He was born in 917 A.D. in Qingzhou, China. To the southwest of the city there are very pretty mountains and forests. He lived in the period of the Five Dynasties and during the Song Dynasty. He is very famous because he always used ink with water added, so his paintings looked misty. He often painted scenery from Shandong. When he was alive, people considered him the best painter of scenic landscapes.
If I were a painter I would paint this painting in the same way he did because I think by having natural and man made things together in the painting it shows that humans an nature can coexist. This painting looks like a dream or a misty day. After you look at it, you will feel at peace. Generally speaking it is a very beautiful painting.
A Thousand Li of River and Mountains
Wang Xi Meng, a teen artist in China’s Song Dynasty, painted A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains in 1113. This painting is considered one of the “Ancient China’s top ten greatest works,” depicting an idealized vision of China. The background of the scene is largely colored gold – the color symbolizing wealth and royalty – further glorifying the country. However, an ominous darkness looms the top of the painting, perhaps a symbol of the threat of an evil practice. In this painting, Wang presents China magnificently. A 37 feet long canvas depicts the countless spectacular views, excellent architecture, exotic animals, and humans living in harmony and peace. At first glance, this picture is just breathtaking landscapes depicting China, but considering the painting in it’s historical background, it is actually a lament for the China’s former glory.
A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains
This painting’s title is “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.” It is 469 inches long, a very long painting. In the painting, you can see rivers and lakes, and very many mountains. If you look a bit closer, you can see a few buildings. This painting’s colors are very interesting. The sky is mostly yellow, the water is mostly dark, but the mountain tops are very bright blue and green.
The painter of “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” was Wang Ximeng. He was very talented and very famous. His teacher was Emperor Jiaozhu Daojun. When he was only 18 years old, he painted “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.” Unfortunately, five years later, he died.
I chose “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” because this painting seems very strange. First, it’s very long, unlike traditional European and American paintings. Secondly, the mountain tops are very bright blue, although real mountain tops are not this color. The way I see it, it almost looks like a modern painting. This is not a bad thing. I think this painting is very special and very interesting.
I think Wang Ximeng chose the bright blue because it shows the sun’s light. I think that blue and green are very beautiful, it makes me imagine opals. I think Wang Ximeng decided to paint a very long painting with very bright colors because he wanted the painting to give people a very powerful impression, as if they were on a mountain watching the sunset. That is why I enjoy this painting.
Wang Xizhi Watching Geese
This painting is called “Wang Xizhi Watching Geese”. Wang Xizhi, a calligrapher of the Jin Dynasty, stands at the edge of the lake on a pavilion surrounded by trees looking out on a lake. On the right side we can see a small house and some green and blue mountains in the distance. The middle of the painting is indefinite, as if there is a thick fog, or the painter did not finish it. On the far left is a poem written by the artist. Almost filling up the blank spaces on the painting are many red seals, telling us that many have appreciated it, and it is truly and exemplary classical Chinese painting.
“Wang Xizhi Watching Geese” was painted in 1295 by Qian Xuan. After the fall of the Song dynasty, Qian Xuan devoted his life to painting, and this painting evokes a nostalgia for traditional Chinese rule. The painting refers to Wang Xizhi, a famous Chinese calligrapher who had lived centuries ago. I picked this painting because of the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere it evokes. Although it is ancient, it makes me think of walking in the park or in a forest. I think the blank space surrounding the images lends it an air of mystery, and this left a deep impression on me.
