Maternal and Child Health Policy Workshop, Emory’s MCH Center of Excellence Collaboration with Morehouse School of Medicine’s Center for Maternal Health Equity, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia, Georgia State University and Georgia Watch

Registrants will develop policy and advocacy skills, network with MCH leaders, learn about maternal and child health in Georgia, meet Georgia policymakers and community organizations. The workshop was developed in collaboration with Emory’s MCH Center of Excellence, Morehouse School of Medicine’s Center for Maternal Health Equity, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia, Georgia State University and Georgia Watch.

Submissions Open, Emory Body & Mind Review

Are you passionate about health storytelling? Join Emory Body & Mind Review (EBMR), a new interdisciplinary health magazine aiming to create meaningful health storytelling through visual, literary, and other written mediums. If this sounds interesting, fill out the interest form linked here.

The magazine is accepting submissions of the following pieces:

  • Personal narratives
  • Creative writing
  • Cultural and historical perspectives
  • Interviews, opinion pieces, news features, and profiles (by pitch only)

  • Essays/fiction/nonfiction: 1,000-4,000 words
  • Poetry: up to 8 pages per poem

Research and Evaluation Analyst, University of Hartford

The Center for Social Research at the University of Hartford is hiring a full time Research and Evaluation Analyst. This is a great opportunity that is local to Hartford, CT for someone that has a background in early childhood, community health evaluation, and/or mixed methods research (preferably with a PhD).

Key position responsibilities:

  • Designs and conducts research, interviews and focus groups, analyzes and interprets quantitative outcome measures and data as well as generates abstracts and compiles reports utilizing the information gathered during research. Writes reports and professional publications for the CSR regarding on-going as well as completed evaluation research projects. Presents research to the academic community, program advocates, board members and sponsors as necessary and/or appropriate.
  • Provides training and guidance to CSR staff on research protocols as well as field work and data analysis techniques focusing on human service program development and assessment, particularly programs targeting socially and economically marginalized populations.
  • Assists the CSR Director in identifying funding opportunities and in the development and submission of grant proposals, budget development and prudent fiscal oversight. Analyzes and compiles reports, documenting progress in grant activity including, but not limited to, monthly logs, monthly comparative analyses and annual reports in compliance with grant and/or funder specifications.
  • Attends meetings and conferences to keep current on the latest developments in the field of research. Participates in professional organizations in an effort to foster collaboration as well as to promote the CSR and its research expertise used to inform social policy aimed toward improving social disparities.
  • Establishes, cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with external constituencies and sponsors. Represents the CSR at meetings and program sites as necessary and/or appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

APE Opportunity, Task Force for Global Health

Dr. Katherine (Katie) Gass with the Neglected Tropical Disease Support Center at the Task Force for Global Health in Decatur is seeking for a quantitatively inclined MPH student who is looking for an APE project. The project will support a collaboration with the WHO to update two Excel-based tools that help ministries of health design monitoring and evaluation surveys for lymphatic filariasis.  Ideally, the student will know or be willing to learn Visual Basic for Applications to be able to update the tool.  The student will work with Dr. Gass and key stakeholders, including WHO and other implementing partners, to design a new tool that aligns with the new global guidance and has a nice user friendly interface.

Please note that this project is unpaid but can fulfill the RSPH Applied Practice Experience Requirement.

Every year, the Office of Student Affairs offers leadership opportunities for MPH and MSPH students to serve as student representatives for the RSPH Honor & Conduct Code Council.

RSPH works to create a council that is reflective of the student body and ask students to sit on ad hoc Honor & Conduct Code committees. The time commitment is 1-10 hours per semester.

Farmworkers and Heat Safety: Why it Matters, Emory Climate and Health Actionable Research and Translation Center

Join CHART for a talk exploring how farmworkers, through the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Fair Food Program, turned the fight against dangerous heat into one of the strongest heat safety programs in the nation. 

The featured speaker is Gerardo Reyes Chavez, who is a key leader of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). Gerardo is a farmworker himself and has worked in the fields since age 11, first in Zacatecas, Mexico, and then in the fields of Florida picking oranges, tomatoes, blueberries, and watermelon. He has worked closely with consumer allies to organize national actions–renowned for their creativity and effectiveness—designed to bring pressure on the large retail purchasers of Florida produce to join the Fair Food Program and to secure heat protections and other rights for farmworkers.

Invisible Corps Screening and Discussion, RSPH Alumni Board and the Atlanta Commissioned Officer Association

Join the RSPH Alumni board for a screening and discussion of the PBS documentary “Invisible Corps”.

Learn the history of the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service and their role in protecting public health in the United States and around the globe. Q&A with a panel of active duty and retired PHS officers following the screening.

This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about the Commission Corp of the US Public Health Service and get your questions answered. There will be several active-duty alumni on the panel including Rear Admiral Althea Grant-Lenzy (05 GH), Captain Zanethia Eubanks (97 HPM), Captain Eric Pevzner (98 BSHES), Captain Shauna Mettee Zarecki (09 EH), Commander Colleen Scott (10 BSHES), and Commander Ben Silk (08 EPI).

The screening/panel will begin at 6pm on Wednesday, October 22nd. The event will be held in the Rollins Auditorium

Table Talks, Department of Health Policy and Management

The Health Policy and Management Department is hosting a series of round table discussions between HPM scholars and current students. All are welcome but registration is required. 

The next event will be held on Thursday, October 16th from 10:00-11:00am in GCR 649. The featured guest at this table talk is Frederic Shaw, MD, JD and the topic will be “Exploring a Multidisciplinary Career in Public Health”.


Atlanta Bioventure Series, Nucleate

Join Nucleate Atlanta, Emory Drug Development Fund, and The Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation this fall for our inaugural Atlanta Bioventure Series. The goal of this program is to help students interested in life sciences entrepreneurship or investing to better understand what happens on both sides of a transaction, featuring interactive modules covering venture capital and drug development. For now, we welcome all graduate students and researchers in Atlanta to come and learn with us. 
 

As a participant, you will have an opportunity to: 

  • Gain a deep understanding of transactions from investors and entrepreneurs who have actually been there and done it
  • Hear how successful entrepreneurs built compelling spinouts and learn about different ways of breaking into careers in law, business development, and more
  • Grow your network with seasoned biotech entrepreneurs, investors, and attorneys both in and outside the Atlanta ecosystem

Format: 1.5 hour modules, with the first hour covering fundamental concepts and the last half hour set up as a fireside chat with guest speakers. Modules will tentatively start at 6:00 or 6:30 PM
