APE Opportunity, CDC Malaria Branch

We have an unpaid opportunity for an interested student with data cleaning and basic analytic skills to complete their APE with CDC Malaria Branch.

To better understand the benefits and potential areas of improvement for Tanzania’s Malaria Service and Data Quality Improvement (MSDQI) program, the student will analyze the MSDQI data and, under the oversight of malaria branch staff, provide key information to the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Tanzania program including describing the overall health facility coverage of the intervention, evaluate the data quality, and time permitting, will assess whether MSDQI evaluations improve over time with repeated activity visits. The student will learn to clean and manipulate datasets in R, create data visualizations including mapping if this is of interest, and could communicate results back to the program in Tanzania. PMI Tanzania is currently interested in revising the MSDQI program, and the student’s work could immediately contribute to improvements in the program’s administration.  Ideally the key work would be conducted over the next 4-6 weeks, though there is flexibility in hours/ week and timing.  All work may be completed remotely.

The MSDQI program is an activity designed to improve diagnosis and management of malaria, surveillance of malaria cases, and prevention of malaria during pregnancy. During the MSDQI program, trained staff visit health facilities across the Tanzania and conduct surveys which assess aspects of malaria case management and surveillance, and provide feedback to health facility staff to improve patient care.

Please contact Dr. Julie Gutman @ fff2 [at] cdc [dot] gov with your CV if interested.

Post-Doctoral Training Program, Health Services Research Center

Category : Alumni

The Health Services Research Center is inviting applications to its inaugural T32 Post-Doctoral training program.

The goal of this program is to train post-doctoral candidates from diverse backgrounds and disciplinary expertise in health services research. There are no specific requirements regarding the type of health services research candidates are pursuing. However, the program does have a special emphasis on research addressing disparities or inequities based on factors such as race/ethnicity, sex/gender, socioeconomic status, geographical residence, healthcare access, and physical/mental disability. Proposals should thus have a component that addresses equity or disparities.

A distinguishing feature of our program is the utilization of a multidisciplinary approach to expose trainees to multiple methods and research areas, from epidemiology and biostatistics to behavioral and social sciences, biological sciences, and health policy and implementation.

Training will include multidisciplinary mentoring along with coursework, inter-departmental seminars, hands-on research, grant writing and career development. Postdoctoral fellows will be MDs pursuing a career in health services research, or PhD graduates in epidemiology, health policy, health economics, or other relevant fields. Post-doctoral trainees will have the opportunity to obtain an MS in Clinical Research or a Certificate in Clinical and Translational Research and can select a personalized training pathway with didactic coursework, supplemented with online trainings from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and other health system-engaged experiences. The program will concentrate on successful training and career development, supported by a diverse group of mentors and affiliated faculty from the School of Medicine, Rollins School of Public Health, and the School of Nursing. The program will emphasize multidisciplinary training, collaborative research, diversity of trainees, presentation skills, and project management. We place significant emphasis on mentorship and career development as well. The ultimate goal of this program is to prepare diverse individuals for leadership positions in health services research in order to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in health care and health care systems.

Please note that due to the compressed turnaround schedule of this first application process, this fellowship is only available to current post-doctoral fellows (as of July 1, 2023).  This fellowship will cover a salary/stipend for 2 years and tuition for the MSCR or CCTR program and will start retroactively on July 1, 2023.  For questions or additional information, please contact Tracy Obertone at tracy [dot] obertone [at] emory [dot] edu.

Applications are due by 5:00 pm Monday July 17th

Special Seminar: Virtual Book Tour, Center for AIDS Research

Category : News/Events

Wednesday, June 28, 2023 | 12:00 -1:00 PM EST

We are delighted to welcome Kevin De Cock, Harold Jaffe, and Jim Curran for a virtual book tour to discuss their recent publication, Dispatches from the AIDS Pandemic: A Public Health Story. The book provides a unique firsthand account from these stalwart leaders of CDC’s early response to the AIDS Pandemic. Drawing in part on interviews from the CDC’s AIDS oral history project, they trace the evolution of AIDS from newly recognized disease to pandemic.

Two of the three stars of the June 28 event – Jim Curran (generous funder of the VDC through the Emory Center for AIDS Research) and Harold Jaffe (founding member of the VDC scientific advisory committee) — were instrumental in getting the VDC started 25 years ago this coming January, and the third – Kevin de Cock – was one of our early speakers (Dec, 2010: “Plan B: What to Do in the Absence of an AIDS Vaccine”).

All three of them have been involved in the AIDS pandemic even longer than I have (which is saying something, as my own HIV/AIDS career began in 1985) and they have a REALLY interesting story to tell.

RSVP for the Zoom Link here.
