ORISE Fellowship, Office on Smoking and Health/Epidemiology Branch

The ORISE Research Participation Program at CDC is a training and succession planning mechanism designed to provide opportunities to students, postgraduates, and university faculty to participate in project-specific CDC research, current public health research, and developmental activities. It is an educational and developmental program formed in partnership with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement.

Criteria:

  1. The ORISE fellow must be enrolled in an accredited college or university working toward a degree in a STEM or Public Health field; or have received a college degree within 5 years prior to the initial ORISE appointment date; or serve as a full-time faculty member at an accredited college or university within the United States.

  2. The fellow may be a non-US citizen, but must comply with all applicable immigration laws and requirements authorizing employment within the United States.

  3. The initial ORISE appointment is approved for one year, with subsequent extensions in one year intervals which is limited to a total of up to five years from the initial start date.

  4. The CDC mentor is responsible for the daily guidance or leadership of the participants, including performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and establishing schedules (days and hours).

  5. The ORISE participant must be located in a CDC facility (i.e., Atlanta, GA) with the assigned mentor.

Requirements for ORISE candidate (CDC Office on Smoking and Health, Epidemiology, Surveillance team):

In general, the ORISE fellow searches, synthesizes and interprets information relevant to advance tobacco prevention and control efforts. Reviews and analyzes studies and projects assessing public health issues related to tobacco prevention and control in order to make recommendations or processes, procedures and/or policies related to public health programs, practices and research. Communicates information to various audiences. Prepares scientific and other articles and technical reports for publication.

More specifically, the fellow will be trained in surveillance and evaluation, and provide analytic support related to critical priorities of the Office; the fellow will serve a key role in: conducting surveillance, analysis, and research; assist in developing data summaries/briefing documents, authoring (co-authoring) papers and other materials, and supporting activities with internal and external audiences to advance tobacco prevention and control efforts. The fellow will also support the three cycles of National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) – i.e., work on publications based on collected data from past year; day to day survey support for administration of current year’s data; help prepare the data collection of future years.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Degree: Master’s Degree or Doctoral-level degree received within the last 5 years.

  2. Discipline(s): Public health. Life health, or Medical science

Desired skills:

  1. Strong data analysis skills

  2. Experience with statistical tools: SAS (intermediate to advanced level) and preferably SAS-callable SUDAAN

  1. Good writing skills

  2. Experience with data visualization, data modernization and/or data linkages

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Fellowship, CDC

A research opportunity is currently available with the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) team in the Department of Human Development and Disability (DHDD) within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

NCBDDD’s mission is to improve the health of children and adults by preventing birth defects and developmental disabilities, and complications of heredity blood disorders; promoting optimal child development, and the health and wellness among children and adults living with disabilities.

Research Project: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), seeks to promote the health of babies, children, and adults with disabilities. The work of NCBDDD includes identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities, helping children to develop and reach their full potential, and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities. NCBDDD has three divisions that carry out this mission: Division of Congenital and Developmental Disorders (DCDD), Human Development and Disability (DHDD), and Blood Disorders (DBD).

The EHDI Team works to support and advance efforts for the early identification of all young children with hearing loss and helps them receive the services they need to reach their full potential.

Learning ObjectivesSpecifically, the participant will:

  • Evaluation: Learn and assist with various EHDI evaluation activities, including planning and conducting program monitoring and evaluation studies or projects to identify public health problems and further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public health programs and policies. Learn and assist with evaluation designs appropriate to situations. Learn and help apply established methodologies and techniques for data collection, analysis, and presentation. Collaborate with and support internal staff in the planning and conducting of program monitoring and evaluation. Assist with the presentation of evaluation findings to a variety of stakeholders.
    • Data: Learn and support members of the EHDI Team in the analysis of data from states and national databases related to hearing loss in infants and young children. Learn about efforts to increase the standardization of data reported by states related to infant hearing screening, diagnosis, and enrollment and receipt of early intervention services. Assist with the presentation of findings to a variety of stakeholders.
    • Health Communication: Provide support in the development and distribution of new and revised EHDI Fact Sheets and other educational materials. Assist with the updating and review of EHDI related web content, including summary of research funded by CDC EHDI and incorporation of elements from infographics. Assist with the development and distribution of the quarterly EHDI Newsletter.

    The fellow may participate on work-groups and/or committees. This appointment will provide a learning and educational experience to an individual interested in the field of public health surveillance, program evaluation, and data management. Participant is assigned to train and help support various projects/activities related to the mission of the Division of Human Development and Disability and can expect to gain a valuable learning experience in the field of public health.

ERASE Maternal Mortality Initiative, CDC Foundation

Job Description:

Reports to a principal investigator of sponsored projects. Exercises considerable latitude and independent judgment in overseeing the day-to-day operation of the research core. Serves as a consultant and provides technical expertise in scientific theory, research and methods of collection and analysis of data sets for a variety of research projects. Using an advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, provides leadership in the planning and development of survey instruments, guidelines, and procedures to collect required data. Coordinates various aspects of the study. Routinely develops research protocols. Reviews and edits text for studies. Conducts extensive literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their applicability to the research. Coordinates research and intervention activities with the team. Provides direction to consultants and team members. Coordinates and conducts special meetings. Develops and conducts presentations, represents Emory at national meetings, and co-authors publications. Collaborates on or authors reports and papers. Performs related responsibilities as required.


Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Sociology, Psychology or a related discipline and five or more years of research/professional experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. Effective writing, analytic, presentation and organizational skills. Experience managing and executing multiple projects and working with senior health policy makers and executives is preferred. Experience conducting focus groups.

Public Health & Primary Care (PHPC) Leadership Institute, Region IV Public Health Training Center

The Region IV Public Health Training Center has partnered with the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development at the University of Georgia to offer the Region IV Public Health & Primary Care (PHPC) Leadership Institute. The PHPC Leadership Institute provides training for individuals from the eight states that comprise HHS Region IV (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee). There is no fee to participate.

The PHPC Leadership Institute is an 8-month experience providing 40 contact hours of interaction. The Institute consists of a virtual orientation; an in-person opening retreat (Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2022; if travel is not safe, there will be a virtual opening retreat 3 hours each day from Oct 31 – Nov 3, 2022); and 6 virtual sessions, lasting 2 hours each. In addition to these sessions, participants will be asked to complete approximately 2-3 hours of intersession work between the virtual sessions.

Liaison Position, Georgia’s Behavioral Health Reform and Innovation Commission

The BHRIC Coordinator provides high level administrative support to the Commission Chairman and subcommittee chairs, and members. This includes taking calls, scheduling meetings, managing executive requests, and disseminating documents. The liaison will also be in charge of taking minutes at all meetings and reporting back to commission members in a timely manner. You can find more information about BHRIC here and here. The Liaison is tasked with assisting in the compiling and preparing the yearly reports from the commission and all the subcommittees, before the next legislative session. The BHRIC Liaison is responsible for the monthly subcommittee coordination with the sub chair and correspondence with members of commission (i.e. calendar invite, zoom link, agenda). Liaison will attend all commission and sub-committee meetings and handle all BHRIC related requests from the Commission and sub-commission Chairs.

The liaison is a grant funded year-round position, expecting to have meetings scheduled monthly for at least one subcommittee. This position is expected to last through July 30th, 2025.

Salary Estimate:

Job Description

The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Influenza Division (ID), Epidemiology and Prevention Branch (EPB) is hiring an Epidemiologist GS-601-12 (TERM).  The opportunity is open to all qualified candidates.  The selected participant will work under the Team Lead in the International Epidemiology and Research Team (IERT) Team.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) at the time the degree was obtained.

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Epidemiologist, Massachusetts Department of Public Health

The Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a dynamic and strategic individual to serve as the Epidemiologist for the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a statewide, population-based surveillance system. The Epidemiologist performs complex work managing PRAMS and linked data, based on extensive knowledge of complex survey design and methodology, vital statistic data, analysis, linkage, and Maternal and Child Health. The incumbent would perform work that requires considerable independence and exercise of judgment in determining approaches and developing unique solutions. The incumbent will be responsible for investigating and managing surveillance of incidence and prevalence of pregnancy risks and infant outcomes through the Bureau of Family Health and Nutrition PRAMS data collection, analysis, interpretation, reporting and publication. The incumbent will provide supervision over, assign work to, and review the performance of an Epidemiologist II, a Research Analyst III, a Research Analyst II, and student interns. The incumbent will provide technical support to staff and identify resources for the professional development of the epidemiologists in the Office of Data Translation.

  • Ability to design analysis plans, collect and manage epidemiological data, conduct statistical analyses, and interpret findings.

Job description: Under supervision, plans, develops, and conducts epidemiological investigations, surveillance and interventions limited in scope and/or complexity to determine the causes of diseases and implement methods of disease control. Collects, analyzes, and interprets statistical data and prepares epidemiologic reports.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in public health or closely related field from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited college or university AND two years of experience performing epidemiological work or work in a closely related field.
