The Gender, Adolescent Transitions and Environment (GATE) program in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, is now recruiting for a Senior Program Manager. 

Under the direct supervision of the Director of the GATE Program, the Senior Program Managerprovides oversight and technical support for multiple program activities including research operations, the management of projects globally and in the USA, partnership buildingand fundraising.

GATE is an innovative research and practice program dedicated towards improving the lives of adolescents and women around the world. We are looking for an individual who brings a technical background and aptitude for managing people and who is looking for an opportunity that is aligned with our areas of work, including pubertal health transitions, menstrual health and hygiene, and access to sanitation. Job Summary:

The Research Scientist will perform and lead the research efforts by identifying research gaps in specific areas of inquiry, proposing specific research projects. Also, to address research questions, designing research projects from conception to completion. Experience:

Must have experience with statistical software packages and expertise in the following areas: aging, research design & methods, statistics, preparing funding requests and publishing journal articles. The Research Scientist must also have experience in research program management, supervising staff members and working in collaborative environments.

Education:

PhD, DrPH, ScD or DrPhil in epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical/translational research and health services research or related disciplines. An MS degree in these fields will be considered when preparation otherwise is exceptional.

This full-time position is a part of the Public Health Research Epidemiology and Population Survey section. It involves performing statistical and epidemiologic analyses to increase the knowledge and understanding of patterns and determinants of population-level chronic disease morbidity and mortality and health risk behaviors. Contractor, FETP Curriculum Support

Background:

To meet the development needs of the preventive medicine system and train public health workers in disease surveillance and response, the Vietnam Ministry of Health (MoH) established the Vietnam Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) in 2007. The Vietnam FETP is led by an FETP office housed under Vietnam’s General Department of Preventive Medicine (GDPM), part of the country’s Ministry of Health. Currently, the program seeks to revise the curriculum for its advanced-level FETP from its current 2-year program to a ‘progressive model’ consisting of a 3-month frontline course, a 9-month intermediate course, and a 12-month advanced course (the model is termed “progressive” because participants in the intermediate and advanced levels can only enter through successful completion of the previous level). Partnering with the Vietnam FETP and CDC Vietnam, the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) will engage the Contractor to serve as a consultant to support 12-month advanced course curriculum materials development.

Specific Work:

Contractor will serve as support to the lead subject matter expert (curriculum expert) working with CDC Vietnam and the Vietnam Technical Working Group (TWG) to support the Vietnam FETP to further customize the 12-month training curriculum materials, particularly during the first cohort of the 12- month advanced training. Working closely with the lead expert, this support will involve reviewing existing Year 2 curriculum training materials, providing input and revising the materials to reflect current epidemiology curriculum design and up-to-date examples.

Contractor will serve as technical support to curriculum subject matter expert to further develop course design for 12-month advanced FETP training in English including:

  • Review of the existing training materials of the Vietnam 2-year program.
  • Overall course design with description of expected competencies, course schedule, M&E materials (pretest, posttest, evaluation forms), and mentor and participant training materials (outline, ppt) for each lecture.

Environmental Epidemiology Fellowship, CDC

CDC Office and Location: A research training opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), located in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The fellow will receive training in environmental epidemiology with a focus on the asthma-related health effects of air pollution, including wildfire smoke. The fellow will support CDC’s activities by analyzing data, reviewing literature, and developing communications materials. The fellow will be trained in data management, epidemiologic analysis, and scientific presentation, and will develop expertise in related statistical and analytical methods. The fellow will also develop skills in critically reading epidemiologic literature and manuscript writing. 

Learning Objectives: The training offered in this fellowship will teach the fellow about asthma, the health effects of air pollution and wildfires and environmental epidemiology. The fellow will also learn about how CDC collaborates with and supports state health departments and other federal agencies to address environmental issues.

  1. Fellow will be able to review and summarize epidemiologic literature.
  2. Fellow will be able to conduct an epidemiological analysis and provide appropriate interpretation.
  3. Fellow will be able to present analytic findings to a public health audience.

About the position:

The Division of Reproductive Health (DRH), Women’s Health and Fertility Branch (WHFB), is seeking two Mathematical Statisticians, GS-1529-13 for the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) team.  The team’s mission is to promote the collection, analysis, and dissemination of population–based data of high scientific quality and to support the use of data to develop policies and programs in order to decrease maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.  Key activities of the team include:

  • Collect and analyze data collected from 50 sites from women with a recent live birth that are used to inform state maternal and infant health programs
  • Monitor changes in maternal and child health indicators (e.g., unintended pregnancy, breastfeeding, smoking, infant health)
  • Provide data for state health officials to use to improve the health of mothers and infants

 

These positions will be responsible for conducting the following activities: 

  • Provide expert assistance in techniques such as logistic regression analysis, categorical data analysis, multiple regression analysis, and techniques involving mixed models, and applies innovative analytical approaches to surveillance and epidemiological investigations of reproductive health data.
  • Provide authoritative advice on optimal research design and analysis methods and on the impact that alternative research/study designs may have on study analysis and validity.
  • Serve as senior technical advisor developing methods and selecting techniques to conduct methodological research to improve sample surveys.
  • Conduct evaluations of data collection, processing, weighting, and analysis methodologies.
  • Design, develop, and implement mathematical statistical models, methods, and/or techniques for weighting complex survey data.
  • Advise on sampling principles, goals, and techniques for design and analyses of population-based public health surveillance systems.
  • Conduct data quality control on sampling frame data, raw survey data, weighted survey data, and test data from surveys and surveillance systems.

ORISE Fellowship, Office on Smoking and Health/Epidemiology Branch

The ORISE Research Participation Program at CDC is a training and succession planning mechanism designed to provide opportunities to students, postgraduates, and university faculty to participate in project-specific CDC research, current public health research, and developmental activities. It is an educational and developmental program formed in partnership with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement.

Criteria:

  1. The ORISE fellow must be enrolled in an accredited college or university working toward a degree in a STEM or Public Health field; or have received a college degree within 5 years prior to the initial ORISE appointment date; or serve as a full-time faculty member at an accredited college or university within the United States.

  2. The fellow may be a non-US citizen, but must comply with all applicable immigration laws and requirements authorizing employment within the United States.

  3. The initial ORISE appointment is approved for one year, with subsequent extensions in one year intervals which is limited to a total of up to five years from the initial start date.

  4. The CDC mentor is responsible for the daily guidance or leadership of the participants, including performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and establishing schedules (days and hours).

  5. The ORISE participant must be located in a CDC facility (i.e., Atlanta, GA) with the assigned mentor.

Requirements for ORISE candidate (CDC Office on Smoking and Health, Epidemiology, Surveillance team):

In general, the ORISE fellow searches, synthesizes and interprets information relevant to advance tobacco prevention and control efforts. Reviews and analyzes studies and projects assessing public health issues related to tobacco prevention and control in order to make recommendations or processes, procedures and/or policies related to public health programs, practices and research. Communicates information to various audiences. Prepares scientific and other articles and technical reports for publication.

More specifically, the fellow will be trained in surveillance and evaluation, and provide analytic support related to critical priorities of the Office; the fellow will serve a key role in: conducting surveillance, analysis, and research; assist in developing data summaries/briefing documents, authoring (co-authoring) papers and other materials, and supporting activities with internal and external audiences to advance tobacco prevention and control efforts. The fellow will also support the three cycles of National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) – i.e., work on publications based on collected data from past year; day to day survey support for administration of current year’s data; help prepare the data collection of future years.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Degree: Master’s Degree or Doctoral-level degree received within the last 5 years.

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Fellowship, CDC

A research opportunity is currently available with the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) team in the Department of Human Development and Disability (DHDD) within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

NCBDDD’s mission is to improve the health of children and adults by preventing birth defects and developmental disabilities, and complications of heredity blood disorders; promoting optimal child development, and the health and wellness among children and adults living with disabilities.

Research Project: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), seeks to promote the health of babies, children, and adults with disabilities. The work of NCBDDD includes identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities, helping children to develop and reach their full potential, and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities. NCBDDD has three divisions that carry out this mission: Division of Congenital and Developmental Disorders (DCDD), Human Development and Disability (DHDD), and Blood Disorders (DBD).

The EHDI Team works to support and advance efforts for the early identification of all young children with hearing loss and helps them receive the services they need to reach their full potential.

Learning ObjectivesSpecifically, the participant will:

  • Evaluation: Learn and assist with various EHDI evaluation activities, including planning and conducting program monitoring and evaluation studies or projects to identify public health problems and further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public health programs and policies. Learn and assist with evaluation designs appropriate to situations. Learn and help apply established methodologies and techniques for data collection, analysis, and presentation. Collaborate with and support internal staff in the planning and conducting of program monitoring and evaluation. Assist with the presentation of evaluation findings to a variety of stakeholders.
    • Data: Learn and support members of the EHDI Team in the analysis of data from states and national databases related to hearing loss in infants and young children. Learn about efforts to increase the standardization of data reported by states related to infant hearing screening, diagnosis, and enrollment and receipt of early intervention services. Assist with the presentation of findings to a variety of stakeholders.
    • Health Communication: Provide support in the development and distribution of new and revised EHDI Fact Sheets and other educational materials. Assist with the updating and review of EHDI related web content, including summary of research funded by CDC EHDI and incorporation of elements from infographics. Assist with the development and distribution of the quarterly EHDI Newsletter.

    The fellow may participate on work-groups and/or committees. This appointment will provide a learning and educational experience to an individual interested in the field of public health surveillance, program evaluation, and data management. Reports to a principal investigator of sponsored projects. Exercises considerable latitude and independent judgment in overseeing the day-to-day operation of the research core. Serves as a consultant and provides technical expertise in scientific theory, research and methods of collection and analysis of data sets for a variety of research projects. Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Sociology, Psychology or a related discipline and five or more years of research/professional experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. Effective writing, analytic, presentation and organizational skills. Experience managing and executing multiple projects and working with senior health policy makers and executives is preferred.
